Hi everyone i have an opertunity to pick up a turbo from a 95 Aero and i was woundering how hard of an instalation this would be, and would i notice a hp improvment with the stock comp? I know thats next on my list, im shipping that out very soon i want it done before saabtoberfest. Anyway Im really not that much of a mechanic i have all of my major work done by Dan at eurotech is this a doable project for a beginner ? thanks

DEFINITELY Check out Eric's (ERP) site for some of the particulars. You should be able to match up the oil and water lines easily, but you'll need to grind out an oval opening in the exhaust manifold to match up with the oval shape of the Aero's 6cm2 exhaust housing....

The 9-5 has the Viggen turbo. No need to port the exhaust manifold.

Hmmm, sounds like the details aren't something your interested...I'd disagree with you a little on your last... Unless of course you want to mismatch the exhaust manifold outlet with the oval port inlet on the turbo housing.

DC you just totally missed what I said. The 9-5 does NOT have the 9000 Aero's larger turbing housing. It uses an identical turbo to the 9-3 Viggen.

All B235R: TD04HL-15T 05 cm
All B234R: TD04HL-15T 06 cm

(Automatic 9000 Aero's used the T25 IIRC, not the point.)

By " Aero Turbo" Eric meant 9000 Aero turbo.

actually i do beleive the 9-5 has a 6cm housing i saw that somewhere i will try and find it again but i believe it is right on melett website yep the 9-5 aero has the 6cm housing

The 9-5 Aero uses Saab part number 91 72 180 ... Price: $820

The Viggen uses Saab part number 91 72 180 ... Price: $820

The 9000 Aero uses Saab part number 91 49 634 ... Price: $851

Melet made a number of mistakes in their catalog. These part numbers are from the Saab EPC, which I think we can assume is a tad bit more accurate.

If you have a picture of the 15G I'd like to see it. I know the 1991-1993 B234R has a different part number to the later years. But unclear on what the differences are.

Just wondering, but isn't your car stock.."in Southern California" with water injection on it?I know your car is a Viggen, but just wondered...

I also wondered what Marko's findings were on his turbo...did you buy it yet?

Yes my car is essentially stock aside from a cooling modification (non-aqueous coolant), different plugs, and no intake snorkel before the filter.

0-100 in 14 seconds is quick enough for now. As I am satisfied with the cold weather performance I'm just looking for the same in warm weather. Warranty is coming up to be over soon though, so might wanna watch out. ;)

Can you get a clearer picture of that label on the turbo? 15g turbos have a different exhaust side to that. In fact ... let me dig up a picture of a bonefied 15g. What you have there looks like a standard 15T.

You can see that it very clearly resembles the 13g of the WRX. It appears the G denotes the shape of the exhaust side and the orientation of the wastegate.

If your tag genuinely says 15g you probably got one which has been tagged in error. That can happen sometimes in the shop. But your turbo looks exactly like a 15T 06cm.

Also note that the turbo I posted pictures of has the part number 49189 engraved into the top of it just as you described from mellet, but it is clearly not a turbo which would bolt up to any Saab downpipe I'm aware of.

Those are pictures of a TD04H not a TD04HL . The H is a smaller turbine than the HL. I would not expect the exhaust housing from a H to fit an HL. All Saab TD04's are HL.

The G denotes the size of the compressor, 15T is the larger compressor.

So, Marko,

Ignore what I said about oval porting the exhaust manifold....

That turbo is the same as mine and should bolt up....

According to what you linked the G denotes "heavier rotor parts" ... but that link is not clear on the matter. If you have another one let me know. The Mellett PDF document has a clear mis-print. The 9-5 Aero uses the same manifolds as the Viggen, and the same turbo. Saab part numbers are identical.

Mellett also lists the G turbo as a 93-98 turbo, when only the 91-93 B234R's have a different part number from later models for the turbo. All of the 9000 Aero turbos are the same from 94-98.

Also the 15 denotes the actual compressor size. Different variant's compressor maps can be seen here: http://www.stealth316.com/2-3s-compflowmaps.htm

The letter at the end appears to denote something about the compressor. However I only have a b versus g comparison to draw that from. None for the t series. Based on the comparison of g versus b it appears to just slightly change the orientation of the efficiency ranges on the map.

dude mine is deff a 15g i promise it says right on the saab stamp..... and it is a 6cm housing as well which i also know for a fact.... i am also prety sure it is an hl... but ill check tomorro wmorning as it is pretty late right now


edit: yep its an hl i couldnt wait till mornin.... its deff an hl....

After looking more closely through the compressor maps I have to agree with you. :) My previous information about which letter denotes what was curtesy of another party and was incorrect.

There's a lot of hard to find information about Saabs. Lots of variants, relatively low production numbers, and few people who tune them. Just look at the data from mellett. Heck even Saab's own electronic parts catalog has one or two mis-prints. That's why I always try to tripple cross reference part numbers with a few other sources (like Nick T's pricing site).
