Just went through this a second time not to long ago. Worst part was I had to learn the lengthy process to just get a tow truck onto the naval base :(.

Easy fix if you have the time and parts though.

Had one at the shop a week or so ago that happened, they just fatique off.

Keeping the serp. belt tensioner changed at a decent interval should help, when they get weak the tensioner pulley jumps around and shock loads everything, that's why you get that 'chortling' sound when you start the engine or when the A/C kicks on.

When they make that chatter noise that's when the belt is in danger of jumping a tooth off one of the the pulleys and getting itself all kinds of shredded - get that taken care of!
