Huge Innercooler In My 900

Hey guys so...I finally been able to work on the my c900. I got everything off and sense I bought a bigger innercooler for 30 bucks from a 9000 (I think), I put it on my 900. it was a little bit of pain to get all the pipes to fit good, and to fabricate the mounts out of steel.

Shes still being worked on should have her done in 2,3 weeks. (need to fix exhaust manifold, Valve, and ongoing bullcrap.) I'll keep you guys posted on exciting stuff.

Turbo lag is increased, I dont hit boost till about 3700RPM but when I do :D:p:eek::);)

lol

Pics are attached, tell me what you think.

When did you get full spool by before?

Best,

3700 RPM dam that seems late. From what I remember my t-3 spooled around 3200 RPM. 3700 is pretty close to where my holset He351 starts to spool and I have 2.1 intake mani, full 3" intercooler piping and a massive aftermarket intercooler. It might have something to do with the length of the tubing you used to plumb it in.

Where in colorado are you? Its nice to see more modified Saabs around here.
Yeah man my big turbo spools quicker...ditch the cat and get a downpipe lol
If I were you I'd try to reroute the plumbing on that beast... Your turbo outlet is pointing straight up, but the IC inlet is pointing straight down. Clock the turbo and give yourself a straighter shot between the turbo and hotside of the IC.

Should reduce your tubing by a foot and get rid of a 180* bend. This will help with your lag.
^I don't buy that. A foot of pipe isn't going to make that big a difference. It will make the spool time slightly longer, but that's doesn't affect what RMP you build boost at/lag. Remember my crazy pipe routing when I put the volvo IC on my car? Didn't really change the rpm at all.

Not saying better plumbing isn't a good idea though.

so if i told you to remove the 180 bend from a 9000's downpipe you wouldnt believe that it would help spool, up??

flow is flow, IJ makes a great point
That is probably what the saab engineers thought when they designed that oh so awesome intake plumbing.;-)

Just in theory (or my 2 cents): Flow is flow ! But to create the same flow with a more restrictive piping you need more work...
Should have done the Volvo 850 intercooler - I think they are an improvement over the 9000 units.... but I guess a 9000 unit is an upgrade over the c900 stock IC. I need an upgraded IC for my 9000 - that thing is really lame and gets heat-soaked VERY fast.

Might want to reread my post, I think you missed the point. First of all, I said that reducing the plumbing would indeed help reduce spool time slightly, which is different from lag, and also said that it's a good idea. Lag is affected more by the exhaust manifold/turbine/DP/displacement/etc. Also, this is an intercooler thread, no one said anything about the downpipe (also it's c900, not a 9000). Bottom line is that a simple IC swap shouldn't add 900-1000 rpm to when the turbo hits full boost. Not sure if he's done anything else to the car.

Thanks drew for the INTER correction, it used to spool at around 3k....car has a 2.5 inch down pipe, with the cat. APC is deleted (FULL BOOST) used to push about 22 psi...now sense my bolts on my exhaust manifold broke off..im pushing 12-13. (Still pulls good) besides the APC, Exhaust, and Intercooler...everything else is stock. I live in Denver area in Colorado. For now Im going to keep things the way they are...ill mess with it in the long run. I think piping is not a problem...I think sense im only running 12 pounds now...it takes a bit for the intercooler to fill up, thats where my 700 rpm difference comes in...

About Colorado:

I live in Lakewood exactly, I go to alot of car meets and shows. But would like to set up a SAAB cruise network every month or so...during the summer. Please let me know if you guys wanna do something like that (for those who live in CO. Im a young guy experiencing with cars, and learning in the long run. I can set up a cruise site for all the people that wanna join this once a month cruise..and so on.:)

Anyhow my car is great...I gotta fix my manifold and ill keep u guys posted.

You have no APC?

I was able to get faster than stock spool with this:

by tuning the APC. Too bad you took it off.

A leak in the exhaust manifold before the turbo will decrease total pressure produced, and it will also increase the RPM that pressure is produced at. Seal the exhaust leaks before the turbo and you will get more boost, and you will get it earlier in the RPM range.

Yup, that exhaust leak, thats your problem...also id get that apc back in there or t5 it because its probably a ticking time bomb without it. (not trying to sound like a d*ck but im lookin out for your car, 22psi with no form of knock protection is no good)
nothing will spin up faster than an MBC.

if you want to get some of that spool up back, switch over to a 3 inch exhaust.

any exhaust leak before the turbo will slaughter spool, its like running with your waste gate partially open

mike
Yup. I had a split weld on my headers at one point that ran about 1/3rd the circumference of the joint, was split for over a year easy - I welded it back up, and low and behold, I got like a 400rpm increase in spool and 4-5 psi of peak pressure, with headers, TD-04 6cm, big FMIC, and 3" exhaust. Even with all that stuff on there it was a slug. You will be very pleased when you cinch everything back down, just don't split any pistons in the time being running too much boost, I have a pair of C900T pistons on my desk at work cracked all the way around the skirt from customers who didn't believe me to turn their boost down a little bit....

Drew

Id be interested in doing a saab meet every once in a while. However without a trailer I will not be able to show up with a car since My SPG has developed a rod knock. If you want to do a saab meet let me know when. I know a hand full of SAABers out here in colorado that would go. Also see If you can get ahold of Jerry Danner the owner of Mile High I know he could get a realy good crew together. Ive always though about trying to get a group together to go to the Golden Super cruse. They do a huge free car show the first sat of every month in Dowtown golden. There is a few saabs that show up every once in a while.

Id go with t5 for sure it is a huge upgrade from stock and the car is 100 times better wiht it. I Did this mod to my 89 SPG and can give you a hand if you want.
Guys whats a T5? Sorry to be such a noob...lol anyways yes..I do know Jerry at Mile Hi, I also go to the meets they have once in a while. But in the summer I would love big SAAB cruises....If we all go to the super cruises in Golden that would be great. But I mean...something...BIG...50-100 SAABs all cruising. Ill make us a Denver Saab Cruise Site...with forums and stuff...so we can upload pics...and share content. And so on... Something so big...that everyone knows about...because when do you ever see 100 SAABs at the same time on 6th? lol Anyhow...once you get your SPG back up...PM me ill take you to one of our meets by the tech center.

Thanks guys! And please explain what the hell is T5.
