Heater valve / Heater bypass valve

Hi guys,

I have a 2001 9-5 which is leaking coolant at a pretty high rate. I took the car to a mechanic (not sure how much he knows about saab's, but his shop is a european specialist, my choice is very limited where I live).

Mechanic said that I'm leaking coolant from the heater valve and that it would cost $440.00 for the part and $250.00 for the install.

Stupid question time. Is there a difference between the Heater valve and the heater bypass valve? (When I look at pictures online, the heater valve looks like the same thing as the bypass valve, just with additional hoses)

I know that quite a few people get the hoses and get rid of the bypass valve altogether, I just don't know if that's an option for me or not.

Any info greatly appreciated, thanks.
