So I got around to doing some cheap mods while I save up for my downpipe.

my rear badge had flaked off in one piece.

So, I treated myself to a Griffin Gear emblem tuning kit in black and chrome. ignore the pollen, it will be clean soon enough.

Now my badges match my wheel caps. (which have a GG wheel cap tuning kit)

Then I trimmed my universal guage pod, to move it closer to the dash and out of the way of my hands. I sanded the cut edges of the pod, primed and painted the whole thing. I also wrapped the a-pillars in black suede I got for a super deal, I probably used $2.00 worth of suede at the price I scored it at, and I already had Super77 from a work project.

I chose black to help hide the pod, and it works well, from the outside you barely notice it. whereas before the black pod was obvious on the tan/gray pillar. lately I notice cops eyeing the pod as they drive by me... now I can roll STEALTH!

cheap, fun and easy little projects.

I did the pass side pillar to match, but no pics, it's the same just without a pod

Dan what does it take to get the hood and trunk badge from you? Just curious. I know I'm going to the new style since both of mine have fully flaked off (never been a huge saab scania badge person). Haven't made up my mind for new style OEM color, something like you have, or ordering some of the scania badges like Jeff P has on his viggen blue c900.

I am not doing full on complete badges with clear resins anymore, but I might have depending on your year, a few emblem tuning kits left (outdoor 8 year quality decal, no inks to fade)

Looks great! Did you have the pod wrapped in the same colour inteior before, and did you use glue to attach the fabric?
the pillar was stock and I wrapped it in black suede using the super77, the pod is just painted as the suede would have been tricky to get to wrap in all the little curves on this style pod.

I keep feeling the pillars.

neat stuff.

they also had colored suedes like this baby blue and green, yellow etc... could be cool for a custom interior.

this is very easy to do, but on curvier parts the thicker suede could become tough to work with. On these, near the edges where it curved alot, I made some small relief cuts where it wrapped around the backside to help the fabric stretch and not buckle, wrinkle or pull away and unglue.

overall, this is a fun cheap easy DIY just about anyone can do.
  • super77 adhesive spray : free courtesy of work
  • black suede : $2.00 courtesy of 50% clearance and girl hooking me up with a price from some other fabric
  • 1.5 hours or labor including drilling hole in pillar for wires, priming, sanding and painting pod and upholstery: free
  • having fuzzy pillars---- priceless

Wrapping the gauge pod is not that difficult. Might take two tries. Material that cheap I would go for it. :) Looks nice.

Ever since in 2001 when Adam K blacked out all the tan in his Vig roof I have wanted to do it to my Vig.. Might be the time.. :)

if it was the Greddy pod I used to have, that would be super easy.. this SP style one looks tricky.

I am sure someone could do it though...

although the professional upholstery guy who did the SP pod in my wife's car had a hard time with the thinner more pliable headliner stuff

Dan you remember ricot83? He had a buddy who used to wrap gauge pod pillars for a really reasonable price. AND the looked awesome. I bet you could still get in touch with Rico pretty easy. Let me know and I'll forward you his cell.

looks great man.

def want some of those GG emblems. any chance there of getting some with the 63 saab logo? the one that says saab and has the airplane under it? but in the round emblem style?

And from the account of how easy it was to do the suede on those pillars i may have to do all of them in my car. front, back doors and the hatch area. should look good with the black interior on the tally...

thanks I took your lead on the suede. I figured I could suede the pillars:cool:, or try and paint the pod tan

I have his email, but I wanted to do it myself this time and have a project to do. His buddy (pete) said this style pod is a real pain in the ass.

I am sure he could do it again, but like I said, I wanted a mini project.
