Exhaust Heat Wrap on DP..pics

I got a JSP 3inch DP the other day. First I coated it with some heat coating that's extremely heat resistant and also keeps some of the heat in. Then I ordered some Thermo-Tec exhaust heat wrap that keeps almost all the heat from the pipe inside of the pipe and distributes the rest. I have a few friends that have it and my friend with the turbo 240 gets turbo spool around 400-500 rpm faster with some of his parts wrapped (dp and exhaust manifold). I'm not kidding or exaggerating either.

I bought some online and then picked up a few hose/ring clamps (metal zip ties work too but I couldn't find any around here for a reasonable price). Clamps work great though.

I didn't wear gloves while doing it so I have really black hands and can feel hundreds of metallic particles in my hands. Oh, well I hate gloves....

here are some pics:

hands..you can't see the little metal particles but they're there, and it doesn't feel to good...psshh but who cares :)

Thanks a lot for the comments guys :)

Yeah, I'll probably wrap the manifold but was too lazy to do it today. I'll need to get another roll.

I don't know if there's use after the cat cause I didn't do the cat...I'm sure there's a little benefit. I did it anyway....just to be "safe".

the heat wrap looks great, but don't expect that high temp paint to last for more than a few minutes. What site did you get the Thermo-Tech exhaust heat wrap from? looks like nice stuff.
Yeah, the paint probably/almost certainly won't last but I did it anyway. The site for the wrap is http://www.optionimports.com/exhewr.html

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that wrap on headers and things like that shortened their life by quite a bit.
I'm not sure about that, never heard that...I'll have to look into it.

Well, I guess I won't be doing it to my header. Just read that and I don't like doing things if there's reasonable doubt that it does damage. His info on that site also seems pretty sound. I guess I'll stay a way from the header with that stuff. I'll jet coat it after the summer sometime. I was thinking about doing that to some of the parts anyway.

Thanks Palmer! People like you make this site so useful and fun at the same time :)

"Heat wraps are great, just do not use them ON the header." quote from the site...so most things should be fine

Pretty sure the biggest downfall to wrapping headers and dp's and the like is that the wrap retains moisture and will weaken the welds on a tubular header or possibly rust your non-stainless DP, which is my guess as to why Nick asked if it was stainless.

The wrap will hold the heat in to the pipe that the mild steel cannot tolerate. ;) Don't expect it to last forever. It will help with heat transfer to the oil pan and delivery pipe. :) It works ok on NA cars but typically they have 500f less exh temps.

I have a few friends with turbo cars and their wrap is still fine. Their cars are boosting a lot more than mine too. Especially the Supra. Thanks for giving me the heads up guys...I'll keep an eye on it.

Thom...do you know if I can still pass emissions tests without a cat? I've always thought I needed it but I may be wrong.

And what do you guys think about this?

If you trick the rear o2 sensor it wont be aproblem since newer cars dont get their exhausts sniffed, they just plug into the diagnostic port. so as long as your car is running right and ur not throwing any codes, you should pass. There are some way to trick the rear o2 sensor that some of my buddies use i could tell ya if u want.

tn, is prolly just different. i might remember that they sniff cars older than 96 tho, that is a stretch im not really sure. I wouldnt see the difference since we both are T5 and should have the same electronics. I might have to due with your car being over 10 years old as well. i dunno...

That looks very sexy, though the black spray paint will melt off almost instantaneously..... haha. But the wrap is very well done. Do you by any chance play hockey? haha, I am excellent at wrapping stuff since I used to play hockey and I taped my sticks all the time..

Supra's are amazing cars.... Beautiful and lots of power to be had... There is a white Supra TT here in town... It's like a 96 or something. It's nasty.
