I received this message yesterday from a friend and thought I would pass it along.

"This morning I was woken up by my alarm clock, powered by energy generated by a public monopoly regulated by the US Department of Energy. I then took a shower in the clean water provided by the municipal water authority. After that I turned on the TV to see one of the FCC-regulated channels to see what the national weather service of the National Oceanographic Atmospheric Administration determined what the weather was going to be like using the satellites designed, built and launched by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. I watched this while eating my breakfast of USDA-inspected food and taking my drugs determined safe by the FDA.

At the appropriate time as regulated by the US Congress and the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the US Naval Observatory, I get into my National Highway Traffic Safety Institute-approved automobile and set out to work on roads built by the local, state and federal Departments of Transportation, possibly stopping to purchase additional fuel of a quality level determined by the Environmental Protection Agency, using legal tender issued by the Federal Reserve Bank. On the way out the door, I deposit any mail that has to be sent via the US Postal Service and drop the kids off at the public school.

After work, I drive my NHTSA car back home on DOT roads, to a house which has not burned down in my absence thanks to state and local building codes and fire marshal’s inspection, and which has not been plundered of all its valuables thanks to a local police department. I then log onto the Internet, which was developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Administration and I post on freerepublic.com, Fox New’s forums and post about how SOCIALISM in medicine is bad because the government can’t do anything right."

Awesome. I've used very similar logic to confuse the 'omgz liberal socialists are taking over our country' nuts.

Yea, because it's working everywhere else right?

How's Social Security and Medicare/Medicade doing?

Last time I checked, pretty much every major government program is failing (currently the biggest waste

being Cash for Clunkers, then add on Welfare, Unemployment needed money etc. etc.)

And they have always failed...

But you must love paying the way for others right?

I love having 26% of my checks going to taxes, and they want to take more, and more, and more....

^ Looks like you missed the whole gist of that message in the original post. Most of what you pay is not paying the way for others...it is paying the way for yourself.

edit: I'm not arguing for socialized health care by ANY means, but it bothers me exactly how misconstrued people's views are on what most of their tax money is going toward.

How much of an individuals tax money goes to those GOs listed?

I just feel that health care is a personal matter and shouldn't be subsidized by tax dollars.

If you look at outlays from the OMB, you'll see that approximately 1/3rd of the budget goes to DoD and discretionary spending.

Even if you add up Medicare/Medicaid AND TARP it barely adds up to what the DoD gets alone.

Re: Healthcare, something needs to be fixed, what the answer is, I don't know, but if we continue on our current path and systems, it will implode. I think making it mandatory is a mistake, but I see no issue in building a system for people who have no other options.

yup, kinda scary that a lot of people dont see the part where its costing them more in taxes to pay to heal the people going to the ER all the time because they have no insurance than it will cost them to make sure everyone has insurance.

and all the people who are swearing to high heavens that america i being ruined all are well off and have healthcare.

anyone else see the crazy bitch on the news at one of the town meetings crying saying she wants her america back?

i dont know if everyone has heard of the Kaiser Family Foundation or not, but it is non-profit independent organization which through its own research tries to provide unbiased REAL healthcare information.

http://www.kff.org/uninsured/upload...uld-Full-Coverage-Add-to-Medical-Spending.pdf

some excerpts:

The annual economic value of foregone health among the 40 million uninsured in 2000 has
been estimated to be between $65 and $130 billion in that year.3 If the middle of that
range ($97.5 billion) is inflated to 2004 dollars, the annual economic value of the foregone
health of those 40 million uninsured increases to $103 billion-a sum considerably larger
than the $48 billion in increased costs of expanding coverage to all of them.
The $48 billion would increase the share of GDP going to health care by 0.4%.
^^^thats the kicker.

as with everything there will be people for and against, being in the healthcare profession i see so much ridiculous shit day in and out, its sad. its the BATSHIT crazy people standing up at town hall meetings just yelling about how the country is being ruined because someone is finally trying to fix the disaster of a system we have.

for example, the family who comes in that owns a pizzeria dealing only in cash, mom and dad drive 60+k dollar escalades, oldest son drives an m3, and they are on freaking MEDICAID because they selective report their earnings.

welcome to the loop holes in the current system and why it is all going bankrupt.

You can't sit and tell me that you agree with the money dumping into all of these programs to "help" us. Let alone tell me that the $300,000 plus I put into Social Security over my lifetime is sitting there waiting when I retire solely to take care of myself?
We are paying the way for others, not entirely, no. But come on.

Did anyone even notice that even with "socialized" health care, there are still millions uninsured?
