engine repair dilemma

834 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Wayfarer
I took the car I just bought (1998 turbo with 90k miles) to a reputable saab independent.
  1. It leaks a bit of oil,
  2. has coolant most likely leaking into the engine and burning off
  3. needs an auto tranny replacement. (differential is messed up)

The car I'm parting out (1995 turbo with 151k)
  1. leaks VERY little oil
  2. is very clean

I'm looking for some thoughts and guidance on options.
1. find a replacement tranny and hope it also is the cause of the oil leaks
2. find tranny and swap engines.
3. find tranny and redo head gasket
4. swap engines and convert to manual tranny

How do you decide which engine is better? Can you?

Drop the oil pans of both and decide yourself.
Both of the same engines...and both of high miles, so no real difference. What's the tranny in the '96?

I would follow the above advise, maybe throw in a compression check.
I'd have to convert to a manual transmission, but since the engine would be out it wouldn't be that much more work. I've got every part I need to do the switch so I'd be saving the cost of a replacement tranny.

I have decided to take the 1995 to a mechanic to see what he thinks. Better to do it now than after I start parting it out and can't run it. I just want to get this over with and move on.

Here is the car I'm parting out...
