Downpipe Vs. The Po Po

I got back to Duluth yesterday afternoon and proceeded to install my new 3" downpipe into my NG900. Got it bolted up, and now I have a 1-foot section of my exhaust that I need to fill. So I took the car for a spin with just the downpipe on.

Drove to show it to some buddies, and it felt funny. So while chatting with my buddies I pulled the fuse for the ECU and let it reset. On my way back I did some adaptation runs over the bridge from Superior WI, to Duluth MN. Hit 100+mph a couple times in 3rd while trying to get it to adapt.

Slowed down for some construction, and once I was through the construction 'areas I was heading into the Tunnels. Traffic was light, and I wanted to do one more good pull in 3rd gear before I got home. Plus I was in the tunnels and I wanted to hear the downpipe roar.

Well, I get on it in 3rd, come around the first bend in the tunnel and their is Mr. State Patrol parked on the side. I slam on my brakes and roll past him at ~55mph (50mph zone). He pulls out and pulls me over just outside of the tunnels.

Conversation was like:
"Do you know how fast you were going?"
'I wasn't really paying attention. I was trying to re-adapt my engine control module because my car is running funny'
"Well, I clocked you at 76, I like 74. Do you know the limit?"
'Oh. Yeah, it's 55'
"Actually it's 50. Did you know your tabs are expired?"
'Are they?!? I didn't know.'
"Yes, they expired in July."

My license still has my parents address on it, and he asked me if I still lived there (in Dassel). I said no, I moved to Duluth for school.

He went back to his car, then came back and gave me a Ticket for 74 in a 50 ($222 fine), and a warning for my expired tabs.

I'm going to talk to the prosecutor in a week or so, and see if I can't get the ticket changed to expired tabs and a warning for the speed.

I really need to invest in a radar detector and scanner. This will be Ticket #10

The radar detector is king in the Duluth tunnels. You know they just shoot the radar down around the corners and can read the cars without seeing them, right?

It is also king everywhere else, saved us 2 tickets to and from SOC alone.

Definitely invest in a rock-solid radar detector - not an $80 one from Best Buy. And if ^^^ is true, and he clocked you before he saw you, you can get out of the speeding ticket EASY. A cop is required to have a "traffic history" before issuing a citation; this means he has to see you breaking the law (speeding), and THEN use radar to confirm his speed estimate. If he was just snoozing, waiting for the audio alert to go off at ~60mph, then he had no traffic history on you and no case.

Good luck bro.

I always wondered how the police would react to the "I'm just trying to re-adapt my engine" line. Didn't expect you would get much sympathy.

I doubt the prosecuter will understand either.

Ouch...I got hit with my first speeding ticket in 17 years (is 33 really that old?) a few weeks back...58 mph in a 35, $235; passing on the right, $100; no signal, $100....Thankfully, the Mass State Police were understanding and hit me for 45 in a 35 ($100), and verbal warnings for the rest....now if that stupid Toyota pickup wasn't in front of me doing 33 mph, I wouldn't have felt the need to pass....ah the pleasure and pain of a fun, fast and great handling ride....

Code, I know he got me. I was pushing 5000+rpm in 3rd gear, WOT, with just a downpipe. I was doing close to triple digits when I saw the cop and slammed the brakes.

There was another car next to me when I came around the curve, so I'm sure he got a visual lock on me at 76.

don't waste your money on a 80 dollar cobra or whistler or whatever junk most stores sell.

Buy a V1 or a passport....V1 is my fav, been using it for 4 years, never had a speeding ticket once. :)

damn that sucks...

in ME we had the new "tina" law, that says if you have 10 violations (not tickets, 3 violations per ticket max) in 2 years they will suspend your lisence for 3 years....
at the moment i have 2 violations, but if i get anywhere near the 10 violation limit im leaving this fucking state..

Dude, you really need to learn some impulse control.

I would not be doing adaptation runs in an urban area, ever, especially on top of 9 previous traffic tickets.

There are plenty of empty roads not far from you in the Iron Range, completely free of cops and other traffic for adaptation runs on, say, an early Sunday morning.

I got off a 60ish in a 35 by telling the officer the car was freshly back from the mechanics and I was making sure the suspension was in order. Really I had fixed the wastegate and it was actually boosting. Just got a verbal warning too.
