Well, I scored a MINT dashboard from a 1989 SPG in the junkyard... for... get this..... 20 bucks with the front fascia hehehe....

Here are some pictures of the process of removing and installing a new dash... It took me about an hour to do... And oh, I figured out why my heater control valve leaks.. turned out some moron put these wire extensions on the stock speaker wires, and the wires were stuck in between the heater control valve and the heater core (where they bolt together....) lol.. I just said fuck it as it is getting warmer out... maybe I'll fix it some other time, I didn't feel like crawling under the knee bolster again....

Man that looks like tons of fun. Cracked dashes do suck though :)

...and you're not the only one who mangles their hands working on their car. Mine are nice and shredded from multitudes of things.

I've got a perfect dash just waiting for me in the 87 SPG...

to remove, remove the centre stack, lower fascia, dash fascia, gauge cluster, remove the rest...
not what I did.....

All you need to do is remove the dash fascia, steering wheel, and the 4 dash bolts... and it slips off over the gauge cluster and everything else.... super easy... hardest part is arranging the wires....

Is there a way to deal with the dash cracking besides covering it with a carpet dash-mat to prevent further heat and UV-related decay, or replacing the entire dash with a better one?

I guess given the structure of the dash (steel sub-frame encapsulated inside moulded high-density foam covered with a layer of black vinyl), there isn't much that us shady tree characters could really do. Has anyone ever engaged a professional repairer to 'fix' cracked dashes?

Craig.

Yeah... I know... the main thing that is killing the looks of my car is the paint... I need a respray in the worst way, but I am still unemployed so yep, that's going to have to wait.... Suspension comes first, then paint along with airflow, whaletail, headliner, shit like that hehe

So guys do you know if it's the same procedure for the 94 dash?
The car I got has a very ugly crack :(
I know that there are a few people that do dash repairs but I'm not sure how good they can match the tan color of the dash...
I guess one other option it would be to repair it and then respray the whole dash in very close matching color...
Does anyone tried the SEM vinyl paints?
It would be nice to know if there is a paint that is close to the saab factory dash color...
