My dash console (not the guages) ie. the radio , heat controls etc. goes dark at night. It almost seems like the sensor on the top of the dash is not working correctly. during the day everything is lit up and at night it all goes dark. If I hold a flashlight to the sensor and start my car at night it all works fine. As soon as you turn off the flashlight it all goes back off. Is this something anyone has experienced or heard of?

Sensor is located in the SID - not the dash FYI - does not control dash lighting aside from SID, ACC and other LCD displays.

If your dash lights are not operating properly see your dimmer (poteniometer switch) near your head light switch. Those go bad pretty often. Usually you have no dash lights or full on when they go bad.

The SOLAR sensor on the dash is merely an infrared pick-up for the air conditioning system.

This may be a dumb comment on my part but did you try the nightpanel button? That dims some but not all the dash lights at night.

yes, its not the night panel button. I am assuming that there is a light sensor that would turn off lights during day but is malfunctioning and is turning it off at night instead. The guages behind the steering wheel all work fine. Its only the middle console ( heat, radio, cd changer and the controls for the radio on the steering wheel.)I brought the car to an independent saab shop, to be nice he hooked it up to a tech2 for free and it all tested fine. he was able to get it all to light up but once the machine was unplugged it all goes off at night still... He is baffled by it. I am just tired of fumbling around in the dark to turn up the heat or change the radio station. Does anyone have any ideas?

So yesterday i decided to play with the user changeable security settings for the alarm. Options to choose from are full alarm (which includes internal motion sensor) or door alarm only. when i choose door alarm only, all my internal lights come back on for about 2 minutes then go back off again. I get no center console button lights at night. Again if i start the car with a flashlight shining on the dome above the SID, everything is fine. Once i turn off the flashlight everything goes dark again...This problem is sounding like a programming issue or a sensor issue. Am I the only person with this kind of issue?

Does anyone have the solution for this issue? I have a 2004 9-3 and have the same exact issue - the dash lights (radio and AC) only work during the day. If I shine a flashlight on the sensor on the SID at night, they work. It is the opposite of what it should be! Any help is appreciated!
