My brother and I are both planning on some major household projects this spring and summer. Since we plan on doing a lot of the work ourselves we decided to buy a truck.

After a couple weeks, using Autotrader.com and Cars.com we found a 2003 Ford F150 4x4 FX4 Offroad.

Huge link from Autotrader, made small: Cars for Sale: 2003 Ford F150 4x4 FX4 in Batavia, OH 45103: Truck Details - 308604023 - AutoTrader.com

I checked it out yesterday and got a gut feeling that this was a good truck. Usually when I get that gut feeling it's right. I've owned a lot of used cars and only a couple I truly regret buying. The truck started right up, and it hadn't been warmed up for me. The test drive went well and the truck sounded real good, I thought it had an aftermarket exhaust. Turns out the muffler is missing. He said it probably fell off while his daughter was driving it while he was deployed. It tracked well and felt very solid and stable as I got it up to about 65mph.

It has a couple of small rust spots on the bottom of the box, just behind the doors, very minor and we're not buying a show truck. I offered him $7000 and he took it. I gave him $100 to hold it and we're doing the deal on Saturday.

When I got home I ran a Carfax on it and my gut feeling was confirmed. Perfectly clean, 3 owner car that started life in Michigan, then came to this area in 2006.

Next week I'll get the exhaust fixed and probably get tires for it.

Plans? It needs tires and exhaust work, I might put dual exhaust on it, but no major modifications.

We just need a work truck and a second vehicle in general. If either one of our cars breaks down, we'd be screwed until it was fixed. If his car breaks down, he drives the truck, if my car breaks down, I drive his car and he drives the truck.

What engine?

Save yourself some coin on the exhaust and just put a flowmaster or similar on. The ford cans are stupid expensive.

7K seems like strong money for a reg cab, but the truck looks nice nonetheless! Good luck. They are great to have in the winter.

It's true that there is a floor on 4WD trucks, I'd say fords are the worst, but still really really good.

My '00 150 7700 was 2800. 5.4, 4wd, 8ft bd. It was WAY more beat to fuck than yours tho. I'm in PA too, so the market may be different.

Market has a lot to do with it, as does condition. Fords are also more popular as work trucks around here.

This one is in really good shape, it also has the upgraded 17in wheel package.

Blue book for this truck, in the condition it's in, is about $7600. I got a pretty good deal, IMO and I'm happy.

Definitely has to do with the area...our 2000 S10 4.3 4x4 was $5500 a year ago with 119k on the clock. Blue book was nearly $8k! For an S10!

Hey! I used to have a truck that was almost the same just a '99

I wish I was able to sell mine for 7k...
How many miles were on it and how old was it when you sold it?

Yep, 4X4 S-10's are stupidly expensive around here.

Finally got the truck home today. I swear this was the worst car buying ordeal ever.

First, my brother was running an hour late. Then when we got to the BMV office it was packed. They handed us number 49 and told us to wait. Then number 19 was called. We all looked at each other and said "Fuck this" and went to the bank and got the title notarized.

Got back to dudes house and he says he left the keys in it overnight(I miss country living), but he had left the key in the "on" position. Dead battery.

The guy can't find his jumper cables and my brother didn't have any, so we put a trickle charger on it. In the process of hooking and unhooking the trickle charger the doors locked and the keys got locked in. Both sets.

By this time my brother is livid and I had to tell him to go sit in his car and calm the fuck down, I got this.

I called the county sheriff who referred me to the Township police who showed up in about 20 minutes. Using a plastic wedge and long steel rod, he managed to hit the unlock button.

The previous owner finally found his jumper cables and as soon as we hooked it up to his Civic, the truck fired right up.

It's sitting in my driveway, with no license plates, now. We'll get the temp tag on Monday and then get it into the shop for a muffler and to have the brakes checked out.

This is a really cool, optional 17 inch wheel. I really like it.

As smooth as swallowing glass! :th_SmlyROFL:

Honestly, if my brother hadn't been there it wouldn't have been half as bad. He shows up an hour late, then gets pissy when things don't go perfectly. I had to tell him to chill out because his shitty attitude wasn't helping.

He's only purchased two used cars in his life, every other car he's bought new. Only one of those used cars was purchased from a private seller. So he's not able to roll with the punches and deal with changes on the fly.

thats a great pickup (double entendre)!
how much?
$7k. He was asking $7900.

I seem to have a talent for finding vehicles like this. Odd combo's of options in work trucks. My 03 E250 was weird like that. It was a work van with rubber floors, but had cloth seats, power windows, power door locks, tilt and cruise control and it had Ford's "Outlaw" aluminum wheels and the chrome package.

The last company van I had was weird too. The whole fleet of vans were Chevy Astro's, except one 95 GMC Safari. It also had a rubber floor, cloth seats, full power, tilt and cruise. It had GM's Rally wheels with center caps and chrome beauty rings. All the Astro's were plain jane strippers. When they got new vans I was offered my pick. I check all of them out and they were all strippers. I told them I'd keep my GMC. It had 255K miles on it when I left the company.

There are a few oddball combo's out there. My dad bought an 89 bronco XLT in 89, 5.0 with a 5spd stick. That was a weird truck, awesome to drive though; power windows/locks, removable hard top, and the stick made it pretty fun. By the time he traded it in 2005 for a new F250, it was moderately rusted (after several repairs), but was lifted 2" on 33's, detroit locker, headers, MSD box, k&n, borla exhaust...I miss it. Such a shame those and the K5 blazers rotted so quickly.

I made a few trips to the dump while I was rehabbing the kids playroom and even with the old ass tires it pulled through the muck with nary a hitch.

Put some new rubber on it yesterday. 265/70/17 Good Year Wrangler AT/S.
