I hate chrome. I think the front end of the 9-3ss is best looking on the road today.

I have decided to de-chrome my 3 piece grille and have it sprayed in all matte/flat black.

Here are some teasers of my work in progress...

Its way to cold to spray in the garage so I modded my downstairs gym into temporary paint booth.

The gym has no windows or ventilation and I have a headache.

Douglas I think you remember the black grill on my OG9-3 from the rallyx this last fall. It looked good for about 3 weeks then the chrome started to show through....

I gave it a good clean to remove all the grease. Let it air dry for a day. Then dusted it off. Painted it in my basement much like you. Headache and dizziness for the loose! Then let it dry for 3 days. Put it on the car. Eventually my work didn't pay off. I am thinking a low temp bake in the oven would have helped. What did you do for yours?

Liketheword, I do recall your and Greg's black grills from rallyX.

First after removal of the grille(s) I went over them with a 60 grit pad to strip off as much of the chrome of as possible.

I followed up with a 200 grit on the plastic slats and went over everything with a dremel using the sanding attachment.

Several washes and an alcohol bath, some dry time and it was time to paint.

I use an aresol spray of Dupli-color brand spray on bedliner truck bed coating.

I decided to use bed liner spray for a few different reasons:

Its tough as shit, abrasion resistant, its a flat black color, it adheres quite well to plastic, and the application fumes give nice mellow high.

I have no idea how long it will last or if it will look like shit when I get around to putting it on my car.

Will post some photos of completed install.

Douglas, sounds like you took it a bit further w/ the sanding. Bed liner spray-on is an interesting idea. I went w/ the duplicolor plastic stuff called krylon (sp?) I look forward to seeing it installed!

Info on the product please.

Links are nice.

My friend and I used the truck bed liner on a grill guard he bought for his truck. While we didn't really do that much sanding, we did paint it right onto the guard(steel).

It took about 2 or 3 days for the paint to fully cure, and be as tough as sh!t. Just give it time.

You still need to sand the grille pretty well, as the chrome is pretty hard. I'd suggest 320 if you intend on keeping the crome under there, or something more aggressive if you wish to hog through the chrome and get it down to bare plastic (in which case you won't need the self-etch primer).

Remember the chrome coating is metal, bare metal, and it should be treated as such. Most primers will not adhere very well to bare metal without at least a light etch coat or an epoxy based primer applied first.

Looks much better. I think GM has been putting way too much chrome on their cars lately.

I'd also like to see a grill with just the wing still chromed, maybe even the very thin front of the edge of the grill too. The rest is just too much.

Looks hot!

I wonder how it would look on mine?

Did you end up doing the ecodes, I can't tell from the pics?

How are the HIDS coming?
No e-codes, am having some clear corners custom made/molded.

I think it would look slick on your car, it matches up in both color and texture to the black accents.

My h7's have arrived, still waiting on the h3 fogs (3000k ion yellow). I was hoping to do the fogs first so I have better idea what I am doing before tinker with the much more important headlights.

Screwing up the fogs is not end of the world, screwing up the headlight is.

I am anxious to get opinion(s) on the grille in person, plenty of stuff left over to do yours if you are so inclined.
