So I have decided to go with the BMW look in my Saab 9-5 Wagon
Black and Tan
Image

I will start uploading photos today...Im starting with the back cargo area cover to see which product I will use for the rest of the car

Here is the plan
Black Dye on the carpets
Leather World Tech BMW Saddle for the seats (mine are already Beige so it should work perfect)
High end vinyl spray for the door panels and the leather inserts will get the same Saddle BMW treatment
The headliner will be sprayed with high end fabric spray out of my spray gun
All the trim parts will get sprayed as well with plastic spray out of the spray gun...some type of flex paint
Lower dash will be painted Saddle brown (still have to see about color matching that)
Carpets will be Dyed
I want a nice combo of black and tan...so some changes may be made

I decided to use cheap plastic paint for the back of the car (and it is cheap junk) because I will not be looking at it everyday...
Krylon Fusion...I give this about a 6 out of 10...It is too shiny (not suppose to be that shiny) and the sprayer is not that smooth...I will use Rust Oleum Plastic paint for the other cheap painting

This the product I am going to use for the door panels, dash etc...

Here is the back defroster covers (for a wagon) and the speaker grills

I also dyed the back cargo cover this is what I expected from one coat of dye...I will let it dry overnight and dye it again...remember I am going from light beige to black...so it will take a couple of applications...4 dollars worth of dye is not too bad...I used an industrial spray bottle and hot water 50/50 mix with the RIT liquid dye sprayed it on...using rubber gloves I spread the dye into the carpet...if it is not spreading well...add a little more water

Yes...I think Im going to buy some beat Aero seats and have a local shop do the Saddle colored leather...I think black french stitching it the way to go.

Someone shoot the person who thought glossy black looks good on plastic...I went and got flat black...I feel better now...look at the bottom one versus the top...the color is so uneven...the bottom paint is a much higher quality paint VHT...this is an awesome spray paint...it does not chip and scratch and it bonds like no other

I actually had a lot of success with black paint meant for BBQ grills, it has just the right amount of sheen without being glossy, and respraying didn't leave any streak marks as glossy would. It looked deeper than flat too. I did that to my Jeep, worked great, and I really want to apply the same to the exterior black surfaces of my SAAB.

Im finding the the dye treatment to the interior fabric not worth the time and effort...I will source the carpet bits and paint the vinyl and plastics...Im afraid that too much painting and dying will start to look cheap.

Not the greatest day to be painting so I am taking it slow...the rear hatch panel on the wagon is all one piece so I had to tape the fabric and paint the plastic first...the cargo cover is a real pain to get a solid black, this is why Im going to buy black carpets (basically carpets will never look good unless you spend tons of time on them)...its not worth it...trust me. I figure if I can paint the majority of the plastic parts, I will buy the other parts in black...the most expensive parts will be the seats (going with Aero) and the door panels (which I will do some sort of custom work)...the headliner should be easy to find used in black.

Each part was sanded with high grade sand paper, cleaned with paint prep...figure each part needs 4-5 coats with lots of time to dry...the reason for this is these panels get hit with cargo, etc...you dont want them scratching every time you hit them with something...

I finished up the back of the wagon...actually very very easy to take the interior apart in a Saab 9-5, much better than the older Saab's...I will post photos soon...waiting for the money to buy the carpets and the seats and trying to track down an all black late model interior...it seems prices are all over the place on interior parts...some people want 400 dollars a foor panel ! and others want 400 for the entire interior ???

Glad you ditched the idea of dying the fabrics. I'd replace your headliner at an upholstry shop rather than buy a used dark one. I found at least for the NG900 even the black interiors came with a light colored headliner.

Also, I think you are better off looking for parts that are already factory black especially in high wear areas like kick panels etc. Paint it first if you must, but stay on the lookout for good deals.

As for carpet, I suggest getting some non-molded 80 inch wide carpet from some place like www.yourautotrim.com At least for the NG, the black interior cars had charcoal carpet, and I know my carpet is a dark gray on my 9-5 (which has black leather).

I bought the 80 inch wide stuff and just spray glued it to the top of the tan carpet. It worked out nicely, and I've had no wear issues since most of the wear happens on a regular black floormat. In fact, I HAVE a black interior NG and considered swapping out to the factory dark carpet but decided against it, mine looks better!

Also, a good tip is to re-paint the black bits as well, if you want a really deep black. I found my painted black stuff looks nicer than the factory stuff. Maybe its age, and the factory stuff looked better in 1994.

Heres a good shot:

Notice the repainted console compared to the original back section. Also notice the deep black carpet rather than dark gray.

Carpet all out, new carpet on the side:

I actually installed the new ontop of the old in the car. I just had it out to clean up the old, and under the old.

Heres a good carpet comparison:

Floor mats from a 02 viggen I think. I sold them and bought speedparts ones from nick at GS that were black black.

Not a bad idea...after going through there website...I think i can use about 200 dollars worth of material and I would be all set :) Great prices too...I can do my headliner no problem...try doing one in a Saab 9000...duct tape is king in that job...I am amazed at how affordable this stuff is !

I really like Gingerbread leather from yourautotrim.com
