Hey guys, lately I've been smelling a terrible smell coming from my car randomly when i drive. Smells like a vacuum bag set on fire. And there's no set time it happens, last week i was driving to work and it started smelling bad, i thought it was a car in front of me but it wasn't. Then a week later i smell it again. The smell started again today so i quickly pulled over and popped the hood and there was no smell coming from the engine area. This is really confusing any ideas?

I would check a couple of things, is there an issue with the ACC/heater unit within the car. The other thing is that have you checked your cabin filter lately? This is located in the fish tank on the passenger's side? If you haven't changed it, could be filled and create all sorts of smells.

Beyond the two stated, there is a blower motor near the cabin filter, and various sensors in the engine bay.

The off chance, does your catalytic converter or turbo glow red?

Hmm. I havent driven my car in awhile, I do recall a smell at one point though and my turbo glows red pretty much all the time. how would those two things be related?

Alright guys i just cleaned my cabin filter today, man was it dirty, i shook it off once and about a pound of crap flung off it. So now its all clean and happy. So far no more terrible smells, so hopefully it stays this way. Thanks for the help guys!

I might have found an alternate reason to my bad smell. My CD player in my car just started coming on and off randomly in my car as i was driving yesterday and the day before. So today i pulled out the whole player and everything was connected fine. Then i took a look in my fuse box. and my Fuse for the radio i think # 19 was literally melted inside and about half of it was broken off. I suppose this is why my radio is acting like it's not getting enough power. And this could of also of caused that terrible burning smell. But any ideas on how to fix the melted/ruined fuse?

If its an interior smell, cut the top of a box of Bi carb soda and leave it in your car overnight.Any additional moisture and what usually carries the smell will be absorbed. If it is really bad and lots of moisture you will see a change in the powder.

Then maybe lay off the mexican food too :)

I'm pretty sure i found the main smell cause. Theres 2 radio fuzes in my car. well the main fuse that was #19 got burnt up and melted, and also my other radio fuse was burnt up. So my theory is that the 2nd radio fuse died out and the 1st radio fuse was doing all the work so it overloaded and burnt the fuse, it literally burnt and the fuse that was in there melted inside of it and was broken in two. That can explain why my radio last week was acting like there was no power getting to it and it kept turning on and off. So i just put new fuses in the 2 radio slots and the radio works fine. I'm supposing the terrible burnt smell was the fuse burning as i was driving?

if that's the case, you may want to try a different size fuse, since fuses are supposed to blow instead of melt...that's why they're there, to cut off all power if something is wrong. just a suggestion?
