so this might be alittle out there but the idea was just too good to pass up. My buddy drives a 96 subaru outback and was just rearended and his car was totaled. The first thing that came to mind was... there is somthing on that car i really want... so we got to talking about it and we dicided it would be a shit load of money but maybe i could make my car AWD.
so my questions to every one is ... has it ever been done? is it even possible? Is it going to cost as much as my car is worth? and am i totaly crazy for even thinking about it?

it just sounds so nice when u say it... AWD 9000cse trubo *starts to day dream*

Saab designed a AWD set up for the 9000 in the late 80's or early 90's but thanks to GM it was put on the shelf because GM already had a AWD setup in use so there was no need for further development of the already designed and prototype set-up. Makes ya just wanna reach out and strangle GM don't it... Had Saab done this as THEY planed to, the AWD Saab 9000 would have taken off big I would imagine - atleast it would have been around and perfected just in time to compete with todays cars. To me an AWD WOULD be an ultimate machine. Anyone who can affordable create a AWD 9000 Turbo go right ahead, and then market the kit cause I'd be right there at the top of the list to get the conversion kit.

yeah same for me.... if GM wouldnt have put it on the shelf im sure saab would have had an AWESOME AWD set up on the late model 9K's.... maybe offered only for an option on the aero models... such as my own :) but ya know what maybe someday one of us will try to convert.?

I'd say for a project of that magnitude you're talking way up there. You'd probably have to have all sorts of custom parts fabbed, not to mention the labor involved in doing a conversion like that.

Its still a cool idea, and damn GM for shelving what sounded like a great design.

It would be a great project with a great bill ... lol
Let´s see:
Custom floor (to pass the transmition and exhaust)
Costum transmition ( subaru )
Custom Gas Tank
Custum Exhaust
Relocate motor to " in line "
Re-arranje tubes and lines
Custom Mounts
Problably reiforcement of the chassi
Costum suspension ( subaru? )
Gearbox ( subaru )
Diferential ( subaru )
Rear axl ( subaru )
etc ...
And all that stuff that comes along to invent and fix...
LOL
BIG bill

1. I really think AWD is a little over rated. The LSD is fine for all but the most demanding conditions. And, if you find yourself in that situation...you need a Jeep.
2. AWD adds significant weight. I hate that idea.
3. the Swedish Kroner, at the time, against the Dollar put the project financially out of sight. Remember...the BMW 540 was quite a bit cheaper than the 9K.

I'd agree with Dave...it would be nice for AWD, but it is and was really financially unrealistic, and you can have plenty of fun with a 9k in the FWD format! If someone wanted a SAAB with an altered engine/trans setup train I'd go for reworking a c900 since they have a weak trans in the stock configuration and they are simple enough to be gutted and rebuilt as necessary!

I still want a RWD 9000 tho :( I don't care about the AWD as much as that - RWD in a 9000 would be sooooo much fun, and with say - double wishbone in the front and struts in the rear, could prolly out handle most high end cars in the circuit. I may still make that dream possible one day - a good welder can fabricate anything, and it's good to know welders who smoke lots too (they are very creative then) lol

What the hell is that supposed to mean? :-?
no- offense, sorry man - I hate Honda's with a passion, never could understand why people think so highly of them when they are such utter disasters of design and quality - I feel the same about these Subaru's - in order to do spark plugs in them the entire engine with subframe must be lowered 4 inches! This is poor design in my eyes - and the squinting concept, it's like trying to see what they were thinking when they did what they did. I'm gonna try not to dig myself a bigger hole and stop here

It would be a neat project to just say that you did it....however without tons of cash its not very feaseable.

I also agree that AWD is highly overatted. I'd love to throw a LSD in my 9-3 and see how that is. Cause so far Ive never been that impressed with AWD...except its tons of fun to drift it in the snow...but now thats what I have my jeep for

Well, like all car companies, cost cutting is a way to save them money. Therefore, car's nowadays are cheaper than ever with shitty build quality. Look at Saab for example... I'm a bit surprised that my Aero contains a bit of GM quality plastic on the B-pillars where the seatbelt is. It's just a way to save money. Of course, you would know all about that, wouldn't you? ;)

LOL - you trying to imply I'm cheap or the fact I deal with cheap GM/Saab's all day long? Cause I'm by far cheap - I'm more the sort who lives paycheck to paycheck and scrambles for gas money. As for Saab/GM - so much plastic, atleast it looks like they put some effort into patterns tho. It's "classy plastic"
