Curious to see if any saabers here are into metal.

What are your bands of choice?

Nice list! In Flames is really good. Bonus points for being Swedish.
Ever listen to Soilwork? Another good Swedish metal band.
Just got home from Mayhem Festival at Verizon.

Dragonforce, Disturbed and Slipknot were the headliners.

Mastadon, Jager Band, Walls of Jericho, Five Finger Death Punch, Airbourne, Machine Head, Suicide Silence, Black Tide, The Red Chord, 36 Crazyfists, and Underoath also played.

Long ass day.
Nice!

I saw Dragonforce last year. Pretty nuts live.

I dont listen to anything TOO heavy, once it gets mostly screaming then I dont really care for it. For me though:

Killswitch Engage
Slipknot (some)
Type O Negative
Soilwork
Cradle of Filth
Five Finger Death Punch
Drowning Pool

I can list more, but it would be better saved for a general music thread.

Amon Amarth is worth a listen if you guys haven't had the privilege. This is the title track from the latest album.

Between the buried and me... if you haven't heard these guys you seriously need to do yourself a favor and check em out, especially the latest album "Colors". One of the most talented bands I have ever heard, and their music will range between hardcore and jazz in one song. Pretty cool, heres on of my favorite of their solo's.
(newer american band, first one in awhile I've liked)
Soilwork
Children of Bodom
In Flames
Opeth(If you haven't heard the new Opeth, "Watershed", click. Now. Seriously.)
Arch Enemy
Decapitated Worth noting that the oldest member of the band when this was recorded was 18, the singer/guitarist. The drummer was 14 at the time.
Kalmah
Bolt Thrower
At The Gates
Immortal
Cryptopsy
Satyricon
Belphegor
Edge of Sanity

Thats a short list :) and most of the really obscure death/grind I never list because most people hate it haha

I see High On Fire every time they come to town.
The last time they played here, my ears rang for 3 days.

I also like Sepultura and a few other bands. I try not to focus on one style though...

I do not want to admit it...I really like Static X too.

Life of Agony is cool, old albums fo sho.

I hate Dragonforce and Slipknot.

In terms of screamo, I feel like there are some seriously good musicians clouded by the singing/screaming. I find myself trying to listen to it without hearing the vocals.

I agree with you 100%, but really name me some good singers in any kind of metal band... theres maybe a dozen.. in history... Its just the nature of any metal, really. Sure, there are ones that are less annoying than others but IMO thats about it.

Metal is and always will be about the musicians IMO.

Also, Meshuggah sucks live. I was so excited the first time I went to one of their shows, and that excitement turned to sheer anger after a couple of songs. Thought maybe it was just a bad show, but have since seen them several more times and every time they are just terrible. Their timing is what makes them awesome and they are SO OFF at shows its pathetic. I waz sad panda.

I just love more pro bands that nobody has every heard of. I love Ayreon. So fucking cool. I absolutely dig listening to their whole albums. Every single musician is amazing and perfected. James LaBrie from Dream Theater cameos a lot, in fact he was a main part of one of the albums.

I am super picky about drummers (been drumming for 14 years now)(No, Portnoy is not good)(Good drummers: Dave Weckl, Dennis Chambers).

If you have the means, look up some Ayreon. If it makes no sense, start at the beginning and go from there. They have some softy middle/filler stuff to continue the story.

I'm sorry, but you like LaBrie and not Portnoy. Your opinion is obviously flawed. :)

Seriously though, James fucking LaBrie? Bleh. He makes me want to rip my ears off.

And I have heard Ayreon. Insane musicianship, for sure.

Has anyone hear heard Ne Obliviscaris? Metal + Violin FTMFW.

i'm the god of br00tal...

i listen to a broad range of stuff.. but for example. Black Dahlia Murder is currently in my car CD player right now and Glass Casket is in the CD player in the garage. definately classifies as metal. but i like a range from something soft as Bright Eyes, Cursive, Circa Survive, Copeland... all the way up to Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Suicide Silence, The Berzerker. and everything in between like Fall Of Troy, Blood Brothers, Saosin, Finch...

Glad to see someone else likes the truly brutal shit, too. Though I'm more into the 'old' bands when it comes to death/thrash/grind. Dying Fetus, Obituary, Nile et al. Agorophobic Nosebleed and Suicide Silence are bad ass as hell. I also dig Glass Casket, The Red Chorde etc.

Really, there are SO many bands that fall into 'metal' its impossible to cover all the good ones.

I'm old school metal.
Judas Priest
Iron Maiden
Black Sabbath
old Metallica
I also like the old school. Gotta respect your roots!
