Hello,

I just got done doing a head gasket on a 2.3 DOHC N/A, I got it resurfaced, a valve job with new valves and valve seals. It ran fine for about a mile then while it was idling parked in a parking lot, it just died. I started it back up but it had a really bad miss, and the cat was glowing red hot. I towed it home and tested for spark and fuel which were both ok, and I replaced the MAF sensor but it still had a miss.

I let it sit for a few weeks and I tried it today, but it was still missing. I pulled the codes and only got 12231 (which is because the engine wasn't running), and I got 12111 while the engine was running. I disconnected the battery and held the brakes for about 5 seconds to drain the capacitors. I reconnected the battery and the car ran perfect and drove for about 1 mile. Then it would only die after letting off the gas or coming to a stop. So I drove it home and parked it in the driveway. It died as I came to a stop in my driveway, and when I started it, it was missing again but hasn't thrown any more codes for me to pull.

I pulled out the fuel injectors while they were still on the rail, and checked for spray which was also working fine. I also put hose clamps on the rubber sleeves that are on the intake manifold in case they were leaking air and all the vacuum lines are in god condition and connected properly. At this point the only options I see that I have left is replacing the 02 Sensor, and tearing down and reassembling the intake manifold.

This is my first Saab, i'm not real familiar with these cars, and I need some help with this one. I've been doing as much research on this issue as possible, but i'm not getting anywhere but broke. Please Help!

First off welcome to the forum, as for your problem the only thing that comes to mind for me when I owned a 92' is I've had a CPS (Crank Position Censor) fail and it caused the car to buck and backfire and eventually wouldn't even run from coming out of timing. But you said you're having just a missing problem and it doesn't sound as severe. But that's about the only suggestion I can make, mine failed out of the blue on me when making a regular commute to town.

This sounds like the work of a bad direct ignition cassette. I had a severe miss fire with my 92 once and it turned out that the d.i. was the in fact the cause of the issue. Also welcome to the forum.

I completely spaced out the possibility of a DI Cassette. PrataMTB is right, I'd try another DI first before anything else. I've had a DI on a 96' 900SE that caused a miss before, but it wasn't too severe it was subtle. But give that a try first.

Di or plugs,, start there,, If not that, check your cam timing, often times when these plugs are over-torqued they will crack in the upper porcelain, causing your exact symptoms

you sound like youve done your homework considering this is your first saab, kudos!

If the converter is glowing red, It could be clogged.

Thanks for the replies.

I should have explained the "miss" better. It seems like it's running on 2 cylinders (I'll try to get a video posted or something). It's a pretty severe miss. SPG, I believe your correct on the CPS. It could still be the DI though cause the one that was on the car when I bought it was siliconed and looked like it had melted a bit (probably from overheating caused by the bad head gasket). I know it's not the spark plugs, they're new, gapped, and not torqued down. I also took the cat off a few weeks ago and it looks like it's in perfect condition. As far as timing goes I am 100% sure it's correct, when it runs, it runs perfect.

At this point I'm sure it doesn't have anything to do with fuel system, or the fuel/air ratio.

One thing I did discover is that it's a royal pain in the ass to get parts for this car. Does anyone know where I can find new or used parts for this car....for a decent price?

Nawww... it's not that bad. Obviously, there are the site sponsors. I've dealt with all of these places:
RockAuto
AdvanceAuto
EEuroParts
FCPGroton
Importec
PelicanParts
SaabSite

If you're looking for used parts, place an Wanted ad here. There are a few of us that have decent-sized collections of parts.

If you're having problems finding new parts... or have specific questions about which brand of parts to get or which suppliers to use... just post a question in the appropriate forum.
