Unfortunately the red car had severe rust issues as well as electrical and other issues and eventually got parted out. Many of the parts live on in my white 9k and I many of the members here's cars as well. I was young and dumber then, and they weren't as rare yet.
So true. If I recounted all the cars I parted/scrapped before I knew what was what I could make us all cry. Especially compared to some of the junk we're using as project starting points these days.

That's why I'm so glad you're gonna put this one back together.

Last night I removed and threw away these nasty little killers.. If you know then you know.



Despite the floor-rusters being a little damp, I poked around on the floorboards and there is no rust or soft spots anywhere that I could find. It looks like someone spilled a pop or something in the right floorboard at one point, but besides being sticky the bare floor is perfect.. Again this car impresses me..





The carpets are absolutely disgusting, but are still in reasonable shape. The next chance I get, I'm going to shampoo them them and power wash at the local DIY carwash to see if I can get them looking decent again.

Those floors are mint!
Carpets look like they'll be decent after a scrub.

Last night I attached the carpets.. I shampoo'd, scrubbed, and power washed for quite some time. They are definitely not perfect, but do look significant'y better than before. Someone had spilled what I can only assume was a dark soda years ago on the right front floor board, so that area is still stained a little darker than the rest, but at least it's presentable now.






I'll probably out the interior back together and work on the other front fender next.

Had a bunch of random unrelated stuff come up over the weekend and didn't do much on this car, but I did manage to at least install the carpet back in the car. I cleaned up the bare floor as best I could and gave any corners or seams a quick wipe-down of wd40 to help prevent any moisture from gathering.

Turned out pretty decent considering.

I don't want to say too much yet, but I might be picking up a rusty parts car (yes, I know.. Wasn't the red car supposed to be a parts car?. Do I still need another one? Am I potentially out of my mind?) Yes, that is all possible..

Anyways, I will hopefully have more details soon, but the price is right and I can't really turn it down. There are parts that both of my 900s can use.

Those carpets look pretty good considering their age. Did you put anything in place of the floor rusters?

For sure you should pick up an extra parts car! I totally endorse it, especially if it will benefit two of your projects.:thumbup:

I'm finally going to pickup the car trailer I made a deal for months ago. It's many hours away in Ontario but combining another trip purpose. I'm trying to resist picking up another 900 just to make the backhaul "more worthwhile". :whacky011:

I didn't put anything in place of the rusters. The carpets fit reasonably well without them there so I'm not going to worry about it. Plus if the floors get wet, I should be able to catch it easier this way, and it can air out easier as well. The factory tar/mat was in nearly perfect shape so I just sprayed a light coating of WD40 around the corners and seams and wiped everything down. Hoping that will resist moisture from getting in there too much.. Probably an exercise in futility, but it is better than most of them out there.

Good deal about the trailer! It's one of the best tools I've ever invested in! Definitely find something neat to bring back. It would be a shame to not lol.

You guys need to stop talking about how useful a truck and trailer are, I already spend way too much time looking for a 9-7x or something else interesting to use as a tow vehicle.

Those carpets did come out great, btw, I should do the same to the ones in my 'vert.

Thanks! Definitely recommend cleaning any auto carpets like this. I'm contemplating pulling the carpet out of every car I own and doing the same lol.

I'll never not recommend having a truck/trailer lol! I'm all about something different and interesting to use for towing. We have 2 options now. The 1985 Chevy G20, or the 2003 Lexus LX470. Both work well and have their own unique strengths. A 97X (especially Aero) would be really cool for towing a classic around

I got an 05 Sequoia limited a few months back to replace my 9-5 Aero wagon. I work at a ski area with a shitty access road and beating the crap out of a lowered SAAB everyday just didn't make sense any more :( Plus I needed something to tow my boat with. I was really into LC's, but the prices were crazy and I couldn't deal with the horrendous fuel economy. The Sequoia MPG's aren't outstanding, but so far right up around 17-18 average vs. the 13ish I hear of most LC's getting. Was a long time hater of full size SUV's, but so far I'm really enjoying the Sequoia!

By the way, great job on this c900! Makes me want to go back and redo a lot of the work on my 85 (which I still drive casually in the summer, but never enough!)

I've seen guys use dynamat or similar, but that requires a good seal to solid floor/paint/coating. I've contemplated some kind of mesh rubber mat under the carpets but never tried it. Indeed, the carpets are generally fine alone.

This trailer is 20 yrs old but well maintained and belonged to a friend, so I'm already familiar with it. I'm always in favor of a new tool/toy.
Looks like I'm coming back light this trip....haven't found a decent/convienient option to pick up and my wife is NOT on board with that plan anyway...LOL.

Ha! This is a natural extension of the car collecting. A relatively low maintenance and multi-purpose tool is my story for it.
My Tacoma does not come anywhere close to the tow vehicle cool factor of Tuner4life's van though.

I've recently upgraded to something that's capable of towing more than a bike rack. I still look at 9-7x's. We all have a problem. It's ok.

Great work on those carpets! My mom recently got an electric power washer for her house that's easier for her to use, so I inherited the overkill gas powered one that she had. I've been pressure washing every damn thing. I also want to take all of the carpets out of all my cars and give them a good cleaning. It's addicting. My water bill has gone up a bit though ;)

The car is pretty severely rusted out, but there are a lot of good parts on it and stored inside as well. They seemed to need is gone asap and I ended up getting the car free as long as I could remove the drivetrain and leave it behind for them. I gladly loaded up the engine hoist and made short work of that deal!

This is the parts car that I assumed the red car would have been




I still need to go through this car and inventory everything (the inside is full of parts too). But I will be using some things for my red car, and some other things for my blue car, and then parting out the rest.

The things that I know I'll be selling are the SPG kit (as much as I want to keep it, the blue car already has one, and the red car is staying stock), flatnose parts, and wheels. Possibly more. We'll see when I can go through everything.

Great find, even without the drive train. You can't beat free.
There will plenty of good parts on/in it. The flat-nose stuff is often hard to find now.

Sorry everyone.. I had all 4 wisdom teeth extracted on Thursday and have been down for the count most of the weekend. Just getting back to this..

The car was in Toledo. It was posted on one of the C900 FB pages kind of late at night. I got lucky and saw shortly after it was posted. The seller was amazing and pulled the ad down for me right away after I promised to come get it. I knew the vultures would swarm otherwise ;) .

As much as I love the flatnose. My 86 has all the flatnose SPG stuff on it already so I'll be selling this kit. I'm still up in the air about adding the side panels to my 1992 base, but I'm probably going to keep that one 100% stock body at this point and really need to recoup some funds to finish it up, so the full set will probably be for sale as soon as my face feels good enough to go out and remove it.

I am also open to trading parts from this 85' for a set of nice headlights, grille, and bumper (with side extensions) to fit my 1992.. But I'll work on a for-sale post for that later..

I did find a set of brand new KYB shocks that fit a C900 buried in the trunk of this 85', so that's a nice surprise. I can't wait to inventory everything that's piled inside.

I am finally feeling better enough to get back to work. This wisdom tooth extraction job has kicked my butt for the last couple weeks just feeling like death..

The scrubbing that I gave the car last month got all the crud off, but the paint still needs a lot of work. I started the initial polish on the roof and right quarter panel last night. I will follow this up with a more fine compound and then wax. Have to start somewhere.





It's supposed to me a little less snowy this weekend so i'm going to start taking the black parts car apart and listing parts for sale. That will hopefully fund the engine refresh for the red car.

That paint looks so much better already.

Curious to see what parts you dig out of / remove from that '85.
