Alright Gurus.. I'm working on the shopping list for my 1992 n/a rescue project. I want to replace all the old rubber parts including the heater hoses.

My car currently has the configuration shown on the right of the diagram. It's a mess of hoses with a plastic bypass valve in the middle of it all.. Trying to figure out what all hoses I need is proving difficult. No single source has all of them, I believe some might be discontinued, etc. Plus the valve itself (which I read is problematic) is $33 itself.

I also read that there is an "update" which takes different hoses and doesn't have a bypass valve it looks like a much simpler 2 hose system (shown on the left of the picture). Those hoses also seem to be more readily available to buy.

For the sake of simplicity and cost, can I replace the current mess to that version with no issues? I can't find anything conclusive in my searching.

Hopefully someone that knows about NAs will chime in, but the update stuff you circled on the left looks like what's on both my 900's (both turbos).

I asked on Facebook too and several folks confirmed that the simpler setup is for earlier cars and works just fine although may slightly put more pressure to the heater valve which may or may not fail it sooner.. Guess we'll see!

I'd rip that bypass mess out of there and put 2 hoses from engine to core. Sooner or later that valve starts to leak...right into the back of the alternator

Everything I've read says just get rid of that mess and use the two simple hoses from earlier years.

My Comm Ed came with a very interesting makeshift setup someone had used to replace the bypass valve when it leaked.
