I have a vehicle that does well in town, 25 minutes into hwy driving and the temp needle starts to climb...to the point of a warning lite coming on telling me to pull over and let it idle. Then, the needle comes down to middle range, back on hwy and 10 minutes later...starts to climb again. Put in a new thermostat a year ago and had the system flushed, new hoses and new coolant...same stuff is happening again. Please help.

Check your radiator, might be faulty fan/coolant leak. Or your radiator pump might be the issue
Took it in and was told it needs a head gasket fix...$3,100...ouch. Not sure what I plan to do. Is there anyone out there that would take this off my hands for $1,000? I paid $5,200...just put on 4 new Firestone tires at $800 and a new front right strut repair. I think I'm done with this pup. lmk
What you have described doesn’t match up with needing a head gasket.
You haven’t mentioned losing any coolant or coolant mixed in the oil due to the leaking gasket. This sounds more like a bad radiator fan/fan not starting up. How is your A/C as there is some logic on fan control.

Did your mechanic confirm low compression on a cylinder and then confirm coolant was getting into the cylinder with a bore scope?

The mechanic mentioned one cylinder was low in compression and that the sparkplug wells had oil in them. My AC does not work, hasn't worked since I bought it. I'd love it if it wasn't a gasket fix. Cyl 1 as 157 and the other 3 on or around 180. Not sure what that means. Has always leaked a bit of oil...never coolant.

Had white smoke pour out of the back while having trouble starting a few weeks back. Embarrassing getting home...then towed it to the shop.
Some oil in the spark plug socket isn’t the end of the world. The valve cover has a pressed in seal to close each spark plug/ignition coil well. At the age of these cars now some leak by would be normal but not a true sign of a blown head gasket on a cylinder bank.

Now, one being low on compression combined with excessive white smoke and hard start up would be signs of coolant leaking into a cylinder and being burned off so this makes more sense.

There is a significant amount of labor required to do a tear down for a head gasket on either bank and the reality is that it isn’t much more time to do the forward bank at the same time. This also means there several things that can be recommended to be replaced at the same time for this same reason adding to the cost.
Thanks. Not sure what to do with this. Can't afford the fix right now...any suggestions on getting rid of this headache of a car?
The cost of the gasket kits for both heads and the timing cover is $1800 through Saab depending on the vendor. You can probably find other kits for cheaper.

What that won’t include is the cost for a timing chain kit which would be the other item worth replacing while you are already in there.

You can reuse the crank pulley and water pump if they are good.
Thanks so much for your input.
