Hello!

OK - I'm going to try to make this as simple and as quick as possible. On my '00 9-3 SE HOT, I've got what sounds to be "bad timing" causing pings and pseudo-metallic chatter during decent acceleration (not flooring it, but definitely pushing the pedal more than grandma).

If the timing were poor, this would trigger a CEL, right? As long as my direct ignition cassette is working, that would be detected...

I'll put this out there... I've been using grade 87 octane fuel, but I've not had these issues with it before. Perhaps the warmer temperature outside (Chicagoland - it's warming up, FINALLY) now warrants that I use 91+ octane???

What do you guys think? If it's just a matter of me being cheap, I'll gladly switch to mid-grade or higher.

Gotta run - looking forward to feedback!

I say run at least two tanks of high octane gas and see if there's pinging.

Yeah - that's probably the fastest and cheapest way to eliminate the question of fuel grade... I'll do that and post the results. And, in the meantime - if anybody had similar signs/symptoms that they found were not related to fuel, feel free to report. :)
