Forgive me for just putting this out here as im most likely wrong but here goes.

From Wiki:

"Saab Direct Ignition is a capacitor discharge ignition system developed by Saab Automobile"

Capacitor discharge ignition - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Some one with more brains than me and electrical knowledge surley should be able to repair or even make a new setup? or is the direct ignition a sealed unit(my 9-3 doesnt have a DI so i dont know)

anyways im just pissing in the wind

It's a sealed unit - part of the problem is the knock detection circuitry and it's amplifyers are solid-state components that are mounted in the cassette. Sometimes it's those parts that fail, sometimes it's the spark ignition portion that fails - there are lots of different failure modes for the cassettes. Especially after they've been exposed to heat and vibration from being hard mounted to the top of the engine.

Fuck... I've only got 1 DIC. It's screwed into my cylinder head.

Time to start hoarding.

Some of my cars actually have two spares in the trunk, in case the primary spare takes a hit during it's valiant rescue attempt.

Some of them have been decorated with medals of valor for their role in getting everyone home safely through hostile territory.

Cassette's that will start and run but throw knock or cam sensing fault codes make good trunk spares. I always used to throw those ones back in the box and stick them in my customer's trunk when they had to buy a new one, told them not to go on a road trip without one.

I just bought a brand new one this summer so I will be all set for a while. The one I replaced wasn't even bad (from 2006) so I still can go back to that one if this one craps out before I sell the car somehow.

It sucks because I would take out a loan out for a new Saab but who knows what the future will bring in terms of parts availability. It kind of sucks you have to prepay for parts...what happens when you need an emergency replacement part?

I've got two spares, one in the trunk and one on the shelf. Maybe I'll pick up a 3rd just to be safe.

Coils for the 2.8 in my wife's car however...it's coming up on 50k, I think its time to do the plugs and I'm thinking I may replace at least the rear bank of coils. Then I have 3 decent spares, and hopefully wont have to worry about at least a pita-to-get-to misfire for a few years.

If those prices at Rock Auto are really over $400 now, they are seriously gouging after the parts shutdown. They were in the $200 range previously. The Standard ones are definitely Asian sourced.

However, Saab doesn't make these, they are outsourced. It seems highly unlikely that the (Scandanavian) company that sells these to Saab would stop making them. It's a high profit item and they have all the tooling already set up and have had it for years so it's no doubt paid for. There are cars as recent as '09 that use these. So, they will just sell through other channels if the Saab deal dies.

On a fun side note, my wife called when she thought she lost my 2nd set of keys. I told her not worry "they'll turn up" and they did.

After the keys turned up I told her "good, because with this Saab out of business thing I don't know how I'll get new keys."

She told me she may have flipped out if I told her that before she found them.

Saab parts will come back on again.
There is to many old Saabs driving around needing spare parts.

Meanwhile you could use your old DIC.
Screw it to the wall and it becomes a hat rack.
use two of them mounted opposed to one another and you have a 4 roll toilet paper dispenser for the bathroom.

I also like the use of 2 of the laying end to end plus 1 sport sedan coil pack for the holiday menorah.

Our dealership charges $450 for a DI cassette.... not saying it's right, but they too have to make some money. Not sure what my cost is on one as I have not bought a T7 unit ever. Last one I bought was a new T5 one for $350.... 4 or 5 years ago.

Typical dealership markup on parts is 100%. Parts is the most profitable department in the dealership.

The list on the black DI (what most dealers were charging) is $442. At the same time, on-line dealers were charging $320 and obviously still making money... they aren't selling at a loss. It's a serious consumer ripoff to charge list on these more expensive parts.
