Base is LPT (low pressure turbo) B205L rated at 185 HP and the SE is High Output or High Pressure turbo (it's a mitsubishi TD04). The SE gets a full crossflow intercooler, so you have the same turbo and intercooler as my Viggen. The ECU is tuned to work with the bigger turbo and intercooler to make 205HP. The base has the smaller turbo and intercooler that returns back (output) on the same end as the input.

I found out that the engines are identical when trying to find one for an '01 9-3 SE that still runs, but knocks severely and has little or no oil pressure.

Unrelated, but I think an oil pressure guage is almost as valuable as a temperature guage on these engines. And more valuable than a voltage guage or a boost guage. At least on the B205 and B235 engines. They are famous for sludging themselves to death.

The horse power is the same for base 9-3 and 9-3 SE with automatic trans. If your car was a 5speed SE then it could be a HOT but not all SE 5speeds were. It was a mid year change in 99. He was right about the HOT's having the Mitsu. TD04 turbo but nagain not all got the Viggen intercooler, it didn't come untill a little later in the year. You almost need to visually check the turbo and intercooler to be sure because there are no markings to tell differantly.

For the interior, all SE's had auto climate control and upgraded SID/trip computer. Where the base models had manual climate control. SE's had electric seats with memory standard also.
The sunroof was also standard equipment along with 16 inch wheels on all SE's. The bumpers were changed also on SE's and the side skirts too as the model aged on.

Hope this helps.

1999 9-3 se HOT has 200 hp and trionic 5
viggen intercooler
different ecu
the same garrett t25 turbo on 1994-1999 saabs
none had the catalog kit unless owner requested it

2000+ 9-3se HOT have 205 hp and trionic 7
viggen intercooler
different ecu
td-04 turbo

and what moonracer said before

Yes, but that's my best guess/opinion.

you can run an SE ecu on a base model car with the GT17 tubro without an issue... but if you have the SE turbo just sitting around you will see a performance gain from installing that as well... if that makes sense

I talked to a friend that has a 2000 viggen and he said that the HOT is a system like a vtech or something done to the computer and it nothing to do with the turbo system
Your friend needs to give away his Viggen.

The HOT also had a bigger turbo and different intercooler to create the extra power safely. And considering that H.O.T. stands for high output turbo..., nothing to do with timing.

Could not agree more.

And please, don't use VTECH here in a serious manner again.* ;)
