In one of the recent issues of Road and Track they compared the new v10 M5 with the new E55 AMG mercedes, the mercedes has more torque by a long shot, but they were surprised to find it is hard ton control, lots of wheelspin and traction control stepping in.

the BMW is all HP (500+?) but it is very balanced and amazing handling. it looks like it will be a mean ass machine.

and the new M6 will use the same engine. If I had one of those M cars i would be tempted to debadge and go out to play with ricers who might think I am a 545i with body kit.

I drove a SMG M3 and it's just a glorified tiptronic, manumatic, autostick, whatever you want to call it. If you're not using your left foot, its an automatic. Don't get me wrong...it's slick for an auto. But it's just not the same (to me at least). Now you've got me thinking though....what car in this class comes with a stick? RS6 is the only one that comes to mind.

Meh. My definition of the difference between automatic and manual lies in the gearbox itself. If it has syncros on real gears and a clutch to control the link to the crankshaft, it's a manual. If it has bands and a torque converter, it's an automatic.

By your definition, VAG's DSG would be an automatic, whereas by mine, it would be a manual. What's everyone else's take on this?

FWIW, the RS6 is no longer available from Audi USA. The next RS here will be the RS4, in about a year. It has a conventional manual gearbox.

Technically speaking you are correct regarding auto vs. manual. Abd I feel you but for the money and for the type of performance we are talking about, I would be pretty picky. But that's just me. I guess it depends on the car as well. I like the new Chrysler SRT-8 but couldnt see that car with a stick...just doesnt fit the personality of the car. A Bimmer though...I dunno, there is a lot of tradition there and it's sad to me that there is no traditional stick shift option. I have been eyeing 545's lately though. I did not like the styling at first but it has really grown on me. The new 3 series looks pretty good as well.

Maybe this sounds silly to some of you, but if my car is so fast that it spanks just about everything then i could care less how it shifts.
I second that. I would like to add however that manual at times can offer a different driving experience, more so with a 6th gear. But you can "shift" in an auto plus with all the city driving it saves me lots on gas.

Automatic transmissions have progressed so much! The auto's in the M's can shift much faster than you or I could ever shift a manual. Plus, I'm sure the car's offer some kind of tiptronic/paddle shifting system to give the driver control over gear selection when he/she feels the need. Oh how I want an M6...

I was just about to get into this thread.... and then i thought "hey i'd swear i've seen this before" and what do ya know, 2005!!!!!! $*#($
