So I got a new door weatherstrip seal for drivers door of my SPG. Was having some water leak probs that make no sense, and wind noise, the seal's pretty flat, hence trying a new seal. I'd thought my doors were rustfree, but upon removing the seal, in a couple places, rust was starting on the surface. I thought, well, just put the new seal on, but then decided that it'll only get worse and end up like all the other c900 rusty door bottoms, so I decided to fix it.

Then I decided to fix my slow windows, lube the regulator, all that.

Well it turned into a bigger project.

Ended up removing the SPG panel since the bottom of the door under that rubber flap that is riveted on was rusty all along the edge. And I had to get the rivets off. Anyway. Here are some pics of what I'm doing.

Here you can see where I dremeled the paint off and found slight surface rust all along that edge underneath what was formerly that rubber strip held on by rivets. Also a couple more serious rust spots that were underneath the SPG panel. When the door panel and everything was on, this door looked 99.9% rust free FYI.

Tomorrow I'll paint the areas with POR15, then prime and repaint talladega red (just the bottom of the door on the inside). Hoping it'll look like brand new. Install my new door seal and done.

Also I'll rig up a new water barrier. Mine was crapped. Trashed it after the 17 years of service.

I'll post more pics tomorrow when I get to the "painting" stage. I bought a couple custom mixed rattle cans awhile back from paintscratch.com. We'll see how well that works out. I'm hoping it looks factory fresh when I'm done.

Hope every thing goes well.

Is that the tan "weather barrier" in the trash? When we took of the door panel on my brothers 900s it had a black plastic sheet. Looks way different then yours. Just saying.

Haha! Thanks! :)

Post up pictures when you are done too! I want to see how this paint matches. I checked out that paintscratch place and the prices see about the same as what I would pay at a Napa for a match.

Some progress

Painted the POR-15 (semigloss black) on the areas I'd dremeled. Also partially installed my new on-door weatherstripping, leaving the bottom portion unmounted since I'll be repainting that area red.

And... then decided that as part of this project I'm going to take off all the body cladding and have it repainted.

When I got an estimate last week for my semi-hit-and-run, the guy at the bodyshop said for $300 he'd repaint all the panels in the factory anthracite satin/matte finish, since the new ones wouldn't match my faded ones anyway. $300 if I took them off, $750 for them to take off and reinstall (I wouldn't trust them not to f them up tho) So, why not ... at the same time I'll put all new moldings on the top, fix any small surface rust spots under the panels. So I got started on that thinking during Thanksgiving I'll have time to get them all off, etc. Got the drivers side panels off.

hehe, funny how one small project can cascade into many many small projects, slowly growing in size.

it happens to me almost every time i try to start one project, i find another that i should or could do at the same time and then another, then another...

finished the door rust fixing

Came out pretty well... I used this POR-15 self-etching primer (grey color) and then sprayed with the Talladega Red paint I got from a website.

I didnt spray clear over it because I was about over this job -- but I might go back and do it at some point.

Also, this seal inside my window had rotted out -- the rubber was falling out in chunks every now and then. I thought it would be NLA but surprisingly was only 25 bucks and available so I stuck that in too.

And how bout that new white water seal eh?

Ready to roll. I doctored up my door panels a bit with leather bits from a convertible. It looks cool. Wasted a ton of time doing it, I'll have pics of that soon.

water seal

I got it from saab (saabsite.com) -- it was 50 bucks (yeah, high for a 50 cent piece of plastic). It keeps water, and i guess dust, etc, inside the door.

PN for this drivers side is "water protection shield PN 4048997" -- I don't have the EPC on my mac so don't have the pass side one handy. New ones are white. The one that came off my car was tan color.

Also -- FWIW, the new weatherstripping seal that goes all around the door (on the door) makes a big difference in wind noise of the door. I guess mine was all flattened, more than I thought. And its kind of cool that when you use the door handle, the door "pops" open now, I guess b/c of the fresh weatherstripping. Feels like a new c900 door (not that I really know what that feels like)
