My dad was pulling in slightly more than 600k a year at that time. But being a finance person, he didn't waste money on frivolous things and he still really doesn't. So why should over 50% of his income go towards paying for someone's new Jordans?
Sounds similar to my dad, both his parents were depression era. He used to talk about how they would blot road tar in sugar and use it as chewing gum. He was very resourcefull when some could argue he didn't need to be.

Without your food sector (fast food workers, butchers, etc. etc.) then you'd have to be taking the time to do all of this yourself.
A butcher is darn close to being a skilled professional. Wegmans butchers make bank, and are pretty high on the food chain too.

Thats why I listed them seperately in my food sector for example. I was just looking at Red's theory

I'm sure plenty of people are taking advantage of the system and even more justifiably need it to survive. But New Orleans is much more of a hole than it was before Katrina...was down there for a conference- yuck, no wonder people don't want to move back.
I was in New Orleans 2 years ago and while there are some nice areas still when your driving around on the interstates and what not its miserable. I would not go back either. Many sky scrapers in downtown New Orleans still had boards in place of windows.

You probably think that's just because I can't make up my mind.

;)
That's usually a sign of intelligence...or a conscience....or both.

I agree...too many "political" issues are just fluff, designed by cunning political schemers working in the shadows to distract the voting public from really important stuff they both parties are failing to address.

How's that for conspiracy?

Panem et circenses. Only with more circus in American politics than pane.

I love reading anti-social program rants on a Swedish car forum. It's awesome! ;)

(who made $2,500 too much in D.C. to qualify for rent assistance)

P.S. Unless you have a cotton field in your backyard as well as an oil refinery, you're at least going to need the "common laborer" to make and get you your designer denim and Saab fuel. (searching for a middle finger icon....)

Ok
But you have to prioritize shit, if you are using payday loans, driving an expensive ass car, living out of your means then you have no business getting government assistance. BOTTOM LINE.
I should sell my Saab then lol

Methinks the way people misinterpreted Aero's comments are the racists here. His comments are directed at "ghetto" people, not any race.

I know plenty of "ghetto" white people.

I didn't misinterperet him using this word, though:
Webster's said:
Main Entry: scum
Pronunciation: 'sk&m
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Middle Dutch schum; akin to Old High German scum foam
1 a : extraneous matter or impurities risen to or formed on the surface of a liquid often as a foul filmy covering -- compare POND SCUM 2 b : the scoria of metals in a molten state : DROSS c : a slimy film on a solid or gelatinous object
2 a : REFUSE b : a low, vile, or worthless person or group of people
- scum·my /'sk&-mE/ adjective
Man, I had no idea Palmer was the violent type!

Meh, if you're gonna complain, you should complain about those Katrina folk's who use their government issued debit cards to buy Louis Vuitton bags at Lenox Mall (upscale mall in my area) than using it for important things such as food and basic clothing.

I know of a few who are living here from New Orleans and for the most part they seem to have a good head on their shoulders, but of course there are a few who have overstayed their welcome.

I have to agree with you on that. I find it more racist when the majority thinks "ghetto" is referred to as a particular race. Any race can be ghetto. Shit, you even have ghetto Asians in Hawaii... how fucked up is that?

Someone mentioned payday loans, which is yet another way corporate America has found a way to squeeze money out of poor people with poor money management skills.

Seriously, what chance do the working poor have? You're typically talking about people with less than college education, working jobs that do not require "book smarts," trying to keep afloat when there are literally teams of MBA's sitting in a room in lower Manhattan calculating how much money they can suck out of them.

OK, you don't like welfare, fine. But can we at least strictly regulate the whole "check cashing", payday loan, car title loan, rent-to-own, pawn shop part of the economy?

No one should be paying more than 30% APR interest, for anything. And it's not their fault if they're stupid enough or desperate enough to sign a contract saying they'll do so.

I pose a question -- which is worse:

(a) a system of government assistance which is abused by a certain percentage of poor people to buy things beyond their means: or

(b) a system in which credit card companies, subprime mortgage companies, car dealers, and a host of others deliberately take advantage of poor people by bombing them with advertising offering them highly desirable products they (in truth) cannot afford, and then charging them exorbitant fees and interest for the privilege.

The only way (a) is worse in my mind is if the misuse of the government prevents the program from doing what it was designed to do, i.e., prevent people from starving.

Anecdotal stories about Escalades and Air Jordans do not sway me when I've seen the statistics on low-wage jobs and working poverty.

Greg I am tracking with you. I certainly think that Payday loans, rent-a-centers, etc take advantage of situations.

However, at what point do you draw the line? The government is currently buying people out of ARM loans. Are you fucking kidding me?

A house purchase is the BIGGEST purchase you will EVER make in your life. If you are too dumb to figure out or understand an ARM loan and the repercussions. You don't deserve that house. I am 24 years old and I am only borderline intelligent (slightly above being able to breathe on my own) and I was able to plan out and an understand the whole process. Hell the government even offers free classes in most cities for first time home buyers.

On to welfare. Yes I know, % to % the abusers to those who actually deserve it is relatively small. But the abusers, who are buying Dark Eyes vodka and dress nicer than I do sure put a black eye on it and make me bitter. So yeah, perhaps it me being disgruntled.

Regardless, Gregg, we can cage match fight at my house on Saturday.
