If you are just flushing, there is no need to lock anything. Thats just because I am doing the seal and need to take apart the linkage to do it.

If you are going to flush the transmission, you will need an 8mm allen socket, I recomend a standard size and a shorty. The fit for the drain is super tight, and it is very hard to get the shorty socket into the space between the drain and the subframe.

My plug was magnetic as is surely yours. I had a fair amount of metal in the plug, plus a very metalic grey tint to the fluid. The fluid I added was the "white and orange" as some saab parts guys call it. It was an orangish red color.

I was having some binding issues after doing the new shif linkage install, it is now almost all gone, the 2 things I need to do are re-align, and tighten the clutch cable, after that I think all will be perfect given the system I have.

I was not able to remove the old selector shaft seal, that sucker was in there good.

So how do you like the feel of the new shifter? Much difference?

When are you getting the new linkage installed?

When are you getting the new linkage installed?
Thats been in since last week, problem is I stipped one of the torx screws that holds the lower stud and pivot. It would bind up and lock up. I would have to coast the car to a stop and reach down and wiggle it around a bit to free it up. I think in the course of all that going on, the rod pulled out of alignment. So I will monkey with it at work Saturday.

The problem seems to be pointing to my cable, a new adjustable one has been ordered from http://www.rockauto.com/ With shipping to a business addy it was around $38.

If I depress the clutch, all bad noise goes away, if I don't depress the clutch, and with the car in neutral, it sounds as if the clutch is bouncing off the flywheel. To my knowledge, Its original to the car, as I have never replaced it in the 8 years of driving it. My old semi good one will be used to diagnose a really messed up 95 900se.

Sounds like the same issue I'm having with my car, but i'm pretty sure its clutch related, not just the cable.

Hopefully the cable's the only issue in your case.

I think I have the same problem. I believe it to be the whine of a worn throw out bearing. When the clutch pedal is out it sounds like a Roulette board at a Casino. Kind of a whirring rotational sound. I thought this may also be my clutch against the flywheel but I'm hoping not. Car drives fine. I'm going to drive it till something breaks though. No sense in replacing a 13$ throw out bearing til the clutch goes.

I replaced the trans fluid today along with some other stuff. As Tweek said before, the fit for the 8mm allen for the drain plug is SUPER tight. My drain plug was also on so hard, I could not get it off without some powered tool help. I put in the GM fluid that comes up on eeuro for my Viggen. I was told it smells like a strong mixed drink by some guys at my work...odd.

Things you'll need to do this:
1 inch/24mm socket for fill plug on top of transmission, plus extensions to reach down there
8mm Allen small enough to fit
Long, skinny funnel to get down to fill plug

It was not hard at all, aside from getting the flippin drain plug off. I had some gunk on the magnet, but my fluid was not as bad looking as I thought it would be. The result of the new fluid is nice - shifting is much smoother. Plus I feel better about it, knowing that it's not possibly really old fluid kicking around in there. Thanks to all who contributed.

Ah, well then. I used a 1 inch socket to get it off. It came off fine without rounding. When I had the plug out I felt adventurous and checked it out and saw it was 24mm. Maybe I should have done the conversion...but that was too much work. Thanks for the clarification.

So, for the record, 24mm is better to use than 1 inch.

did you get that clutch cable in? i had to replace mine at one point in my ng. i got the manual adjustable from napa. wasn't bad at all to put in, just tight. as for your clutch. the assembly may be alright. sometimes you can get away with a simple clutch plate resurface. costs you $30. i'll be happy to throw in a helping hand. using those lifts sure makes things easier.

sorry to hear that ben. what did you end up getting to replace? it is a good time to upgrade to hydrolic like you are though. need help? hopefully you will get it worked out quickly. weather is getting nice...

Is there a better choice for tranny fluid than the SAAB stuff? I was thinking of using the Royal Purple Max Gear but I am not sure if it will be ok or not. Also I do not have the manual as the dealer who i bought the car from is getting me a new one but they have not delivered it yet. How much fluid do I need for my 99 Viggen?

I actually used Royal Purpal Syncromax for my tranny fill. Unfortunately I didn't get the full amount in due to an axle not all the way pushed in.

So far though, its pretty damn smooth..even during quick shifts. I'm going to stay off of it until I get the full amount of oil in.

I know of a few others that have used Royal Purple in their Saab and love it.
