Bring Saablink Back to Life...

I am posting this here because I can't post anywhere else in a general fashion. But, I think this site has definitely fallen from it's former glory. The technical help is usually pretty consistent with demand, but I feel like people have sided with social media outlets for updates on their build or just car pictures in general. Social media is great and all, but It's very divided between a couple of different Saab groups. I much prefer this community if we can keep it up. I think that Saab of the Month was a good way to stimulate action on the site, but it's been dead now for almost 2 years to the date. Is there a reason we can't carry this on? If it's a matter of finding the people to keep up with it, I can think of about 3 people, myself included, who would be more than happy to do so. Not trying to step on anyone's toes, I was just wondering if anyone else agrees with me, and if so, maybe we can try and do something about it to bring people back.

This is normal across the board on most forums. A majority of folks are just lazy and can post all their dumb questions to facebook without being told to search. And most of the time they get answers quicker. Even forums where the cars are still being made are slowing down. I am just happy at this point to still have saablink to come to and hope that the folks running the site never decide to shut it down (or at least would give some sort of fair warning before doing so). Unfortunately the only way that the site will be what it used to be is if Saab either starts making cars again (cars actually worth blogging about), or if the classic Saab market somehow explodes. I've been distracted with other projects lately and haven't worked on my Saabs in a couple of years. If I can somehow gather the motivation to work on them again I'll update a couple of build threads. Until then, I just enjoy occasionally socializing with the few active members that are still here.

I hate facebook.

I agree 100% that we need to energize this site. I believe most of that responsibility falls on the members; creating build threads, sharing news & pics of repairs big & small, even sharing pics after a carwash...shit, anything. I know my mentality is, "whatever repair or improvement I've made isn't of interest to anyone else, so why bother sharing," but if we all thought like that, this site wouldn't exist. One member's post encourages another to share and so it goes...

I have never come to these sites looking for the latest SAAB news or model info; I have always come for the stories and photos, to look for answers to problems I'm having and to offer any insight into problems others are having.

We should bring back car of the month.

A lot of the thoughts listed here resonate with me. I think the facebook groups are crap, but still occasionally post a photo to them. I don't ask technical questions or look for useful information there.

Sometimes I feel like I'm wasting people's time by just posting pics here without any update to the 'build.' Maybe I'll do it more often anyway.

I always check the 'link first when I have a technical question, and I generally get thoughtful answers on anything I end up asking in one of my threads.

I would participate in car of the month (at least voting) if we were to bring that back. Maybe we can brainstorm some other ideas to get the activity up around here?

it really is a shame how this forum has gone downhill. A lot of the community has seemed to abandon saab, they're all either driving BMWs or miatas. Even if they still own Saabs they don't visit unless they need something!

not that I'm upset about it, I just miss how the community used to be here.

I haven't even seen any of these Saab FacePuke groups.....Still here on this forum every day, contributing when it seems useful. As more of the regular members have dropped off lately, it has gotten rather quiet.

I haven't had a Saab on the road in over 4 yrs and progress is beyond slow, but still tinkering with the rusty collection...

I have some nifty moss and lichen photos from removing an '86 notchback after many years in a dark corner of the driveway.

i might be getting a smart phone soon =) . 10 years late but you gotta start somewhere right? if so my contributions on here should go up. i am always doing something to the cars. the facebook groups are generally just annoying, especially the "viggen enthusiasts" page.

I try to stay active on here but I stick mostly to the c900 and 9000 forums. Unfortunately there isn't much activity there. I really wish that I had more time to work on my Saabs, but I have gotten involved in so many other projects that the Saabs are always getting put on the back burner because they are strictly pleasure vehicles at this point, and I want to restore them correctly and take my time. Unfortunately that means that they end up sitting a lot. I would never get rid of them though. They are very special to me.

I might start posting in off topic more to at least have some more social activity between members.

Here are the other projects getting ready for winter storage this year..

I cancelled my facebook a few months back and couldn't be happier. Mark Zuckerberg is a jerk and his company is a money generating spy machine. Sharing everything with a bunch of people who are mostly rooting against you anyway just isn't very fulfilling to me--I already interact with the people who's opinion I think is valid outside of facebook, and that includes (most of) the folks here at Saablink.

Anyway... this place does need more builds. I hope to be launching one myself here pretty soon.

Jason, I am so jealous of your garage. Damn. If I had that much space, I'd have a very, very serious problem. Right now I've got 5 cars spread out between two states. How lucky you are.

You've got some great projects going on there! Please keep us informed with updates and pictures!

I know you're right. It's mindless re-shared nonsense that is tiring. Unfortunately, so many events with far away friends are planned on that hell hole, so I don't really have a choice.

Posting in OT was the thing to do back a couple years ago. Lets spark some talk about stuff. Also, is that a Cressida?

facebook is lame. I haven't had an account in almost a year I think. I even upgraded from an iPhone to a little $50 flip phone.

my quality of life has definitely increased. You really don't notice how much you bury your face in your phone until you're looking from a distance.

It's sad how much less people actually interact personally and face to face these days.

What would really light a fire is a good ol' flame thread, no pun intended. I vote to resurrect Viggenluca.

Thanks! I'm so happy to have them all together at last. Until this year they have never even all been in the same place. Now I can work on them much more efficiently. Links to the builds will he in the thread I started in OT

Well Troup, you've inspired a burst of promising TSL activity at least!

Cool storage / shop / collection, tuner4life! Large garage space ftw!
I tried to convince my wife we should pour a concrete pad over much of the backyard and build warehouse space...she didn't agree, even though I argued that she might have a better shot at indoor winter parking if that happened (two garages stuffed with 4 Saabs, 2 bikes, hoarded parts, etc = daily drivers outside in the cold/snow).
