If you can pull the changer out, it's usually pretty easier to open them up. I have dug around inside a couple of them and it's pretty easier to see how it works and why it might be having issues.

You should rub a bit of oil on the rubber seal before you screw it on. Use it as a lubricant so it doesn't tear the seal. My only guess as to your problem, unless it's not screwed on straight.
