2-way radios.

Ok, many of the midwest types have expressed interest in getting 2-way radios for the caravan to SOC.
Instead of having me buy them, you guys should check out the REI website, and order off of that. If there is a store near you, get it shipped there and shipping is free. There are stores in Maple Grove, Roseville (mine), and Bloomington. The prices are great, and shipping is fast. If you are not by a REI, regular UPS rates apply.

These are the two radios that I would reccomend:
8 Mile range, 40 bucks a set.
http://www.rei.com/product/738358

For 10 dollars more you get a bit more range, NOAA radio, and rechargable batteries.

http://www.rei.com/product/752792

Hope this helps everyone out.

expect sub 1 mile range out of the "8 mile" units if you use them inside of a car. I have a set of the Motorola 8 milers. it MIGHT go 8 miles in line of sight with NO obstructions, but in actual use, less than a mile. good for car to car communications, but even if you have a large group like at saabtoberfest, the cars in the back won't be able to get or transmit to the cars in the front.

you can get random non name brand 2-ways for cheaper than that, but from what ive seen they arent even worth it, the Motorolas are much much better than the shitty unidens and store brand ones that are cheaper.

Least time I tried, the cheap brands don't mix well with the Motos, anyway.

Search your local craigslist for some CB radios. I see handheld units go for around $40 here.

What about CB radio's? They seem to be basically as cheap, and you can add a window mount antenna to extend the range drastically.

Such as this

http://www.amazon.com/Midland-1001Z-...335680-0876938

with this antenna:

The beauty of buying from REI is the " 100 % satisfaction guarnteed" policy.

If they do indeed suck transmitting out of a car, you can return them.

But before that, they'll suck and we won't have communication among the convoy.

I strongly suspect PaulH is right about the range.

I get a discount, so I might get a burly set with an 18 mile range.

I'll buy a set of the 40 dollar ones, too just to try out. If they blow, I'll return them.

I'll keep you all posted.

the things do work in a convoy situation, just don't expect then to work more than about 1/8 as well as advertised fine for highway driving where you are not getting too far separated. A CB with a roof mounted antenna will blow it out for the water for sure, plus you get to hear about the weather, and the prostitutes from the truckers.

Well for us C900 folks without A/C, we'll have all windows + sunroof open, so being in the car shouldn't make that much of a difference for us in regards to reception

You could do earbud headphones, like the iPod or hands-free cellular kits.

I've driven my red c900 'vert to Omaha and back, it's not *that* noisy on the highway with the roof up but a window or two down.
