SOC ? s

I've never been to a Saab event, and since my friends were thinking about visting someone in Detroit I was thinking about checking out a college I got accepted to and am going to try to make it to the SOC .

I was looking here http://soc2007.eventbrite.com// and am a little confused.

It costs $150 for a ticket!?

I was going to drag maybe 3 friends with me- only one who's into Saabs the others aren't even into cars that much.

It's going to be impossible to get them to go if a ticket costs that much.

We are staying at one of my friend's friends houses for the trip and he wants to go visit more like in July. I don't think I'll be able to convince him to go late August esp. if they're not gonna go to the show.

Also, does becoming a SCNA member give me any kind of discount?
and Does everyone just park and show off their car?

You can probably show up and look at the cars for free. The $150 pays all your meals, and gets you into seminars (about working on saabs), and the parts tent.

But I don't think you have to pay anything just to look at the cars in the parking lot.

If you're going to be in the area anyways, it wouldn't hurt to stop by the day of, and see if you can get a day pass just for that day.

like the geek says, the $150 pass is for meals & all of that which it sounds like you would not need.

They usually offer day passes which might cost $20 or so for a day & that money goes to help defray costs of the convention. Some people that only want to stop by for a day just to look at cars do not pay & just walk around.

Does anyone know the actual ticket price? The $150 pass includes 6 meals? $15 a meal would mean the pass is $60 - 20 a meal and pass 30?

it doesn't really add up

Would I still be able to have my car on display with a regular ($20 ish ?) day pass? My friends wouln't have to pay b/c they're just going to walk and look around?

Also, are there any caravans planned that are on the way from St. Louis? Maybe Indianapolis or even Chicago? I'll have to bust out a map and check out what St. Louis route would meet up with other cities.

The one thing about a convention is that the costs involved do add up very fast! Hotels and Convention centers do not charge a mere $15 for a meal....try $30 plus, then factor in gratuity and tax. Want some extra room space...you get charged for that...big time. There are also food & beverage guarantees, room block guarantees and ancillary fees. It isn't just about driving to a hotel and parking your car and having a look around. Conventions are very expensive events to plan and host, and a very stressful process for the local host club.

You know, you should e-mail the organizers. I was just at the website and the entry fee listed for "Concours d'Saab" is $0. Yes, zero.

It's impossible to tell from the website if you can enter your car just with a day pass. (or if the zero cost is because it's included in the other entry fee)

Pester them for an answer. I hope the answer is yes.

That is correct. We certainly do not charge for a concours, but we do want to gauge the interest, hence the reg question. We need this for planning the catagories and how much room we need for the event. Obviously if we have 50 vs 250 cars in the concours, it affects several things. Believe me, the reg form along took hours of discussion to make it as "intuitive" as possible.

>It's impossible to tell from the website if you can enter your car just with a day pass. (or if the zero cost is because it's included in the other entry fee)

Day passes are not on the website, nor do we have a price figured out yet. We have a lot of overhead to cover, and the $195 for the weekend was the lowest we could go, BUT in line with previous years, the same actually I think. If you are not registered, however, then you are not expected to be walking around, as its an SCNA event and our insurance covers SCNA members. The day pass gets you in to see what is going on, basically, and into tech etc. Right off hand, I don't know if that includes concours or not.

>Pester them for an answer. I hope the answer is yes.

As much as I hear you may not like it (due to conflicts with Saabnet policies), the way to get answers is to post questions on Saabnet. Or go to the convention website and there is a link for questions there too. I hope this helps a little bit. As far as the overall cost of attending, as someone said above, it costs a ton of $ to get this all together, not to mention hours and hours of planning, still going on. All donated time too, I might add. While no one wants to pay to get in, if you really want to see what is going on, that is the way to get the most out of it, esp if you are driving for several hours to get there. So, at the risk of sounding rude, "you get what you pay for".

Hope you can all join us!

Yes, thanks for the update. I appreciate it greatly.

If you make it clear that you can enter the Concours for free, I'll bet you'll get a lot of day passes, and a ton of cars entered.

Posting that info here, just on the link, probably got you an additional 10-20 cars for the Concours.

Very cool, indeed.

Three questions:

1. What is the concours

2. How do you accommodate vegetarians with the whole meal plan? If not....is there any way vegitarians can cut a slight bit of the cost by leaving out the "food part"?

3. What the crap is up with the Saabnet favoritism? Are they more official or something that I don't know about? Does are website not look and work crappily enough for it to be official enough?

Concours = standing around looking at essentially brand-new looking but very old cars. I refer to it as "stick up the ass hour", but concours really isn't my event anyhow.

2. I went to SOC '05, everything there was made with egg & loaded with sugar (diabetic w/ severe egg allergy). I spoke to the organizers beforehand and they set aside Guru-safe food. I made it through my vacation without having to shoot up on anything just fine... the caterers will accomidate you. There isn't a "veg*n" option when you register?

Hey, thanks for the info! I'll be there for sure!

So, what exactly are the issues with "saabnet policy"? I would think as the chair of the event, you could respond on any forum you wanted to.

Ugh.

Anyway, thanks for all the work. I can't wait to go.

The saabnet thing pisses me off greatly. Unless I hear otherwise, I will guess that Scott is not allowing paying saabnet members or people who he sponsors to acknowledge other saab websites or something....maybe???
