Best location for a EGT sensor
 
I know there was a discussion here and elsewhere about whether to put the EGT probe before or after the turbo...

I'm leaning toward the manifold instead of the downpipe, but where?

Who has put one in, and what's been your experience?

As I understand, the place to have them is right where the exhaust from all 4 cylinders meet. But also from what Ive heard, it hard to make a hole to put the probe in, without making damage. Also, you dont want any parts to enter the turbo so youd better remove the turbo before drilling.

u want it in the manifold where all four runners meet... if this is not possible u want it as close as possible... to that point..... it definately is b4 the turbo not after..

Does a fitting have to be welded, or is there a heat-resistant epoxy that can secure it?

when u tap it, it should be tapped with a thread and then some kind of sealant should b used.

you can either tap it or weld a bolt on top of the hole... but do make shure you clean the manifold out very well after your done..

I'm planning to take the manifold off before I do it, so I'll be able to clean out any shavings before they get into the turbo....(mmmm...ground up metal in an exhaust housing...Now that's a nice sound!)

Drill, tap, fit, seal....

Should be relatively easy....

There is one more important point to consider, and thats the max temp the probe can handle. Before the turbo is definitely the spot. But my thermocouple and gauge can only read up to 1600F, and Ive seen it above 1500F. This restricts it to after the turbo. I would recommend a gauge and thermocouple that can register 2000F if you want to tap before the turbo.

awesome - this is good info. I am waiting on my auto-meters so now I know one step that I'll hafta take to prep the manifold before hand so I don't hafta remove it once it's ON the car. We need a picture/text of the procedure exactly - anyone care to write this up? If no-one does it before I Install mine - I'll do it,

To the best of my knowledge, an autometer gauge is only capable of reading 1600 F. I use Apexi gauges as normal highway temps are around 850 C with spikes to 940 C. I've seen readings around 1100 C but that was a problem with the car. (This is how I knew something was wrong) I would certainly look into a 1200 C gauge.

BTW 850 C is about 1560 F. Your normal highway operating temp is going to register on the edge of the autometer gauge, not leaving any room for WOT runs or problem solving.

If you are running a good tune, your car should read highest temps after you let off the accelerator (assuming you drive hard)
