I got a 2.3....he,he
I picked up a 96' 9000 on the weekend for 300 bucks .
It's a 2.3 turbo, 5 speed manual I'm gonna rip the motor and box out , sell the gearbox.....,then scrap the rest of the car. Then... throw the 2.3 motor into my 900,(after a full rebuild) oversize pistons ,cams and port matched everything. I'm also thinking of a top mount 3071,or Copy Chris with an up pipe Holset.. I'm undecided. The fun begins.... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

right, you've been quiet down there during your winter months, but spring must have sprung and you're getting geared up for summer!

braaaaaaaaaaaaaaapppppppppp
When do do holsets, know that big turbos cars are all about the plumbing around them. Dont skimp out on manifolds, downpipes, ect ect. Thats the difference between a lagmaster setup, and one that breaks your face also, He351cw's are awesome. Maybe the best all around turbo ive ever seen installed onto a saab

Thanks for your interest guys,
I'm going to need tons of advice and all of your experience with this engine build. To be honest.... I've never fully rebuilt an engine before, But I can turn a spanner and I love researching stuff. So be prepared for loads of stupid questions and random threads about nothing...lol Quote:
I'm going to finally get my stage 5 on the dyno proper.. Now everything is sorted. Ive been busy with other stuff. I got 10 things going on at once around here... lolz Quote:
I got the sub-frame on a wing-nut setup... he,he,he Quote:
The main stopping me from going with a Holset is manifold options(or lack of). But In saying that... I've done minimal research on this and maybe there is more options than I think. As far as I know "Vigge" was the only one doing a Holset mani. I don't think the "Up Pipe" mani would flow as well as a good tubular would. (I could be wrong on that too) :-0 Quote:
At this early stage I'm learning towards a top mount 3071. *But that could change from week to week* RIP.... last parts car gone. ![]() I'm getting a bit of a collection going .... lolz ![]()

I still say the Gt3071wg is the best all around street/strip turbo for our cars, it works very well and you can get it to fit on the stock manifold with a header spacer. The manifold will give you another 15bhp give or take.
Put some enem cams and bam 400whp+ E85, kick it up another notch ! Maybe W/M for you ! That is still my favorite, I love that set-up. John

And the GTX even more so. The spool on those things is incredible.

Stupid question:
Why is the motor in the 9000 mounted on a forward angle?

garret reliability scares me. not only because we have all in saabs seen the lifespan of t25s, and gt17's, but because in non saabs garrets track record hasn't been much better.
i also like it when a turbo comes stock on some vehicle, any vehicle (never mind a truck with a drive-train that is known to be bulletproof) this generally means it is put though large amounts of testing, and quality control. Many aftermarket turbos are not. (anybody remember hearing about precision's failed burst testing??) Easy to service, very durable parts are a great idea!!

I can appreciate what you are saying Mike, with reliability in truck turbo's. I'm a trucker. I know big Detroit Diesel use Holsets.
I don't think I know of any big diesel engine that runs a Garrett.. I could be wrong on that. Out of curiosity Mike...... Does the He351cw exhaust flange suit out manifolds? It looks the same. Or is there any manifold options ? And just for a comparison.. How does the He351cw compare to the 3071 in flow and spool ? Have you got ant pics of one installed? ![]()

both turbos are good for 450+whp, spool time is tough to compare because everybody is running different manifolds, exhausts, and intercoolers, however the people who use them on dodge pickups, (and swap them into older trucks) say they spin up unbelivable quick. Compressor maps indicate flow very near an hx40.
they use a t3 flange, early 9k manifolds have this. also, it should be noted there is much more to a turbo than the compressors, housings play a huge part in how well a turbo works. Holsets tend to use oversized housings, which keeps temps colder, and air velosity down ever at higher volumes (air speed shouldn't move quicker than the speed of sound) it should be noted the exhaust side lacks restrictions as well, See image below ![]()
