Arrow The Next Step

So i told myself when i got my car that I was going to build it no further than
Stage 3(Intercooler, 3" Downpipe, Intake, ect...) but now that Im there, I really don't want to stop.

I don't want to go as far as getting new pistons and what not, but i would like something that will keep me building my car up.

So what do you guys think should be the next step in building a fun Saab?

Is your motor a T5 or T7 ?

Throw a stage 5 at it.

ya you're limited to stage 4 with your pistons (even at that stage you're pushing it)

do more suspension mods
get your exhaust done up with an E-cutout
experiment with diverter valves

there's always something you can do

I went stage 3 right away (after having a stage 4 car) and thought that would be enough. I then did full suspension to make it more fun and took care of making the car look good. Do that and then see where you stand.

This.

You've got enough power to be quite fun. Now sort out the handling

Easier said than done. The chassis on these cars are really awful.

But you can improve it, get a koni kit or other strut/spring combo, rear sway bar, rear hatch brace, 6 pt brace, maybe front strut bar, CA bushings/poly kit...

Could improve other areas as well, engine mounts, trans mounts, short shift kit, exct.

I didn't say (nor intend to imply) that it could be made perfect - but it doesn't take too much (ARB) to make noticeable improvements.

I was thinking suspension, Koni lowering springs paired with new shocks

I was planning of being a cheap ass and getting KYB GR2 shocks, What do you Guys think?

If you're only planning to keep the car for a couple of years, then maybe the KYBs. If you plan to drive it hard, or keep it for a while, then Bilstein HD or Koni...

I think it's the wrong move for a guy who wants a "fun" Saab. KYB's are softer than stock, won't last, and won't stand up to stiffer springs.

Put in Eibach springs and Koni shocks. See the "Eibach & Koni: Winning" thread for reasons why. Add an upgraded rear bar, poly bushing for the steering rack or rack brace if you prefer.

That will make your car fun.

This is the right question.

OP: If you're just using the car as fun DD and intend to sell or trade it in a couple of years, go the most cost-effective route. You'll never recoup the cost of the upgraded suspension components or the other mods, so you could bank that and use it toward your next vehicle.

But if you're serious about upgrading the performance and intend to keep the car for a while, then invest in the Konis or Bilstein dampers with the lowering springs. It's a HUGE difference over stock and those two brands are more reliable than KYB or what's on sale at Sears.

Kinda forgot about this thread.

Realized over the weekend that I want to keep this car for a long time
So I'm thinking of doing a Full Koni set up

and in about a year put forged pistons in and maybe go as far as a Top Mount but we'll see

Christos knows my plan - I thought I would "stop" at my level - I am finishing up getting all of the bushings upgraded to Powerflex and have the SAS sway bars in, so the suspension is great (only thing more would be a big brake kit, which is really unnecessary).

But then I eyed that I could do a little bit more, so my plan is to get a hold of some Wossner pistons and put them in, along with the T5 cams that I have sitting around.

That is just about at the limit of what I plan to do.

Of course, if I were to win the lottery, I would ship my 9-5 over to Sweden and give Maptun carte blanche at putting in everything under the sun. Hah.

I would replace all the wear items, such as engine mounts, ball joints, ect, ect. Before going balls out. Take it from someone who jumped to ROFLpower a bit too soon and ended up replacing all the 176k items at once.

This. I would do shocks/struts/springs though during that and do what you're talking about however I would make sure that you have all of your ducks in a row with your suspension. All the bushings, ball joints, trans and engine mounts, end links, the whole nine yards. Then when you make more power it'll be able to handle better. I'd also look into upgraded brakes if you're going to make more power.

The stock engine mounts didn't like the extra power, replaced the front two and the rear mount exploded. Then the cv joints.

Actually, you should take both your axles down to CV PROS in madison, have them rebuild both for 70 bucks an axle. When I was on a track in Mexico, at 135 the passenger side CV boot on the intermediate shaft ruptured, all the grease flung out and started making a horrible rattling/knocking noise.
