as most of you guys know im building my 2000 viggen right now. im ordering my turbo tomorrow and pretty much decided which one i wanna get but am curious to see what you guys think. looking for 400-410whp and would like to keep the torque under 400ft/lbs. i know the gt28 pretty much maxes out at 400hp and i dont want to push the turbo to its limit too often. the gt30 can hold that power range but is the spool time really worse? any input on this or other things about these turbos would be great. thanks in advance everyone
thanks Palmer. did you have a LSD? so you think if im going to stay under 400hp shouldnt i just go with the GT28? and avoid the delayed spool time? is your car a daily driver?
No LSD. I would have imagined that would have helped quite a bit.
It used to be my DD, yes. I sold it about 1.5 years ago.
It was just fine, if you kept it under 3k RPMS. That helped the DD ability quite a bit. I guess I would rather run a big turbo at 70%, rather than a smaller one at 100%, ya know?

thats what i was thinking, i just dont want for the powerband to go from no power to a surge of alot of power with the gt30. did you experience something like that?
havent looked into it. im just going with what nick has on GS since im going to have him do the tune. he's proven all his work with those turbos so i rather use the garretts. but thanks for the input
Now that I've read your original post, my 56mm HX35 netted me ~400whp with under 400lb.ft. of torque, easily. If you've got the $$ though, go for the GT30 I suppose.
Note that the GT3071R 0.64 and 0.86 are really VERY different to drive - careful which one you choose. 0.64 spools a lot earlier but just scrapes through 400chp.
0.86 is laggier and later, but makes 450chp+. If you can live with the 0.86 it's making better use of the compressor side and EGTs are better too.
(This assumes you are using standard cams)
Since I fitted my 0.86 I've been constantly turning down the midrange boost and to be honest it gets nicer and nicer to drive. Palmer is spot on with his comments and imho the car is faster in the real world with less midrange torque...

you can see the map overlay with the gt3071 and the gtx3071. The gtx has more top end but spools a little later. I have a 0.64 witch spools at 2900-3000rpms. Its easy to drive daily and I can get excellent mph when not dipping into boost constantly. (its hard not to) 390whp, 410 ft/lbs is what i'm running. with 25-28psi
GT3071r vs. TD-04 16g (turbo I had before the garrett)
Thank you for the very useful info. with that kind of torque, how has your trans been holding up? im pretty much looking for the kind of numbers you have. thanks again
If you're going to have Nick do the tune, why not just ask him what he recommends? He seems to be pretty pleased with a recent tune he did with a 2871.
haha my fingers are crossed for the both of us. just ordered the gt3071:twisted:
