i am looking into putting a set of t5 cams in my viggen. my car is currently stg3 and i have a set of t5 cams i can get for free. i did use the serch button but i could not find out if anything needed to be done other than tuning. any little advice would be appreciated. thanks
i dont think you would have to mess with the tuning at all if you compare the duration angles on the t5 cams-INTAKE 14o BTDC, 46o ABDC. EXHAUST 44o BBDC, 16o ATDC
t7cams- INTAKE 12o BTDC, 39o ABDC. EXHAUST 37o BBDC, 14o ATDC
and the lift is the same for both cams 8.65mm
the only real reason for going with the T5 cams is there open longer i would think that T7 wouldnt have to be retuned for these cams. its not that much of a diffrence
t5 cams have more lift and durations its either 0.3mm or 0.35mm more cant remember off the top of my head. idealy its needs re programing but the slight increase in flow should be well within the standard map. if you going for more aggressive cams then your likely to be flowing more air than the ecu can cope with at set rpm's, tps's etc.
I think it needs a retune, not so much in that it will not work, it's that the retune will take full advantage of the cams and show real gains. This is true with most real hardware upgrade on a T7 car. The hardware itself bolts on, but the largest benefiet is when the tune matches.
using a set of verniers t5 cams measure a 8.6 or 8.65mm lift and t7 cams a 8.3mm lift. plus the other data i looked at somewher said the same info. if you get pre 1993 cams then they have even more duration but no more lift iirc.
thanks for the info, i was just wondering what a couple of peoples point of veiw are. oh yeah your flange steel is cut and all cleaned up. i am taking it home tonight and it wont cost u a dime!!!
Here is the info. http://www.genuinesaab.com/temp/cams.htm
Since T7 is MAF based you will be ok with this mild cam swap. Going to the bigger 264s should have matching software but that takes more parts anyway.
If you're gonna do it, make sure you know what you're doing or have a pro put them in. I've got them in now, but managed to crack the vaccuum pump driven by the exhaust cam in the process...on the bright side, it gave me a reason to take the head off, get some headwork done, and order forged pistons from GS. it's all getting done at the same time along with green giants, adjustable cam sprockets (advanced 3-4 degrees), and a retune from JZW for my recent w/m install and all the aforementioned work. I'll let you know how it all goes down...and if there's time, i'll try to snap some pictures.
but in a nutshell, if you've already got em, go ahead and put them in. I think Nick's experiments with just putting t5 cams in showed some increase in the middle and up top, witha little loss down below, hence my reasoning to advance them 3-4 degrees... but whatever you decide...good luck!
thanks for that advice. i am a mechanic and have built a couple of engines before, not any saab engines though. my buddy is also a saab tech and i will make sure he is there too.
what t5 cams can you have>?
i have always wondered if i could do this without a tune. and if so what set of cams would be ok.. and still give performance..
yup. go to GS, then go to the gallery, and I think under installs...they have dyno sheets of before and after t5 cams were installed. in a nutshell, the result was maybe a 300 to 500 rpm delay on everything till about 4000ish, but beyond that power and tq gains are clear. Easy fix if you have adjustable cams sprockets. good luck.
