nasty nitrous backfire today :-( stuck solonoid

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm...ndid=321316604
hope that works
anyway the pull was 385WHP & 420 ft lbs on the mustang (dynoed 400whp at SOC was 365 on this dyno with the same setup)

at the end of the pull I was in 5th letting it roll down & I pushed in the clutch
the engines RPMS ran up to 6000RPM with my foot off of the pedal & I dumped the clutch in 5th, there was a loud BOOM which blew all of the fittings out of the intake & TB & then it sounded like a real jet engine was running under the hood untill I got the bottle turned off
it took 3 big halon extinguishers to keep the fire at bay till I could get to the bottle turned off
it wasted my harness & a few hoses but all & all not too bad
take care'

I heard about that. Some unknown Saab "mechanic" and I were trying to remove the engine in his SPG when you called and told him about the nitrous incident.
Glad to hear the resulting damage was minor.

Yea, that guy thought it was going to blow up, he doesn't know Nitrous is not explosive. Now a methane injection leak could have been a problem.

Sorry you blew up your intake Jak, nice video though.

Thats funny, yea everyone likes to let you know nitrous is not flammible by itself, but when mixed with fuel, its bad... I think he had a nitrous backfire in the intake manifold and the stuck solenoid aided in feeding the fire.

Now is a good time for those forged pistons so you can really hammer it down next time!

I still plan to run a 50hp shot one nozzle wet system to help get my big gt3076 spinning up here. I found out we have 3 spots reserved for saabs on the Pinks All Out TV show this summer at Bandimere.

We still have an open spot, maybe you could come up here and blow some minds on Pinks

Sorry about the mis-hap, things happen sometimes and you never know when lady luck may frown on you. I hope you get it back up soon and thanks for sharing the damage!

John

re: nitrous isn't explosive....

Technically true, in the same way that gasoline itself isn't explosive unless it's in the presence of oxygen, which we just happen to have in relative abundance in the atmosphere, and in a container that can develop pressure.

Add a concentrated oxygen source thats under pressure, as in the case of a nitrous bottle, put it into a fuel-rich environment, throw in the likelihood of leaks and mechanical failures, and you have the title of a great Warren Zevon song: "Trouble Waiting to Happen"

Not everyone likes the idea of nitrous, I realize that, but I feel anything man made can fail and sometimes sh*t happens. My turbo gets a piece of crap in it and toast it, Nick bends a rod, Jak has a stuck solenoid, fuel pump fails, oil line blows up or pops off and you toast the bottom end and the list just keeps on going. These are all the same to me, failures of man-made mechanicals.

Having a solenoid stick is not different and no more expensive than an oil pump or filter or line taking out the bottom end. Fuel pump fails and takes out the motor, fuel injector explodes or comes out of the intake track, a fuel line leak, coolant hoses, power sterring pump explodes, these things happen.... Its part of the big power game in my opinion,

John

That made me think, the compressed tanks could and would explode with enough heat and be just like a bomb and go off like it did on the fast and furious, but it would probably take a little longer to get the tank that hot than what they showed in the movie, the fire had just started, it would probably take 5-10 minutes before the nitrous tanks exploded.

Just like an aerosol can in a fire, tanks can be dangerous in fires and remember Jaws? He used a bullet to blow the tank up and take out the shark and I think Mythbusters proved that can and will happen with a compressed tank like that... Just food for thought...

Except for the fire and explosion risk, no....there's no difference.

exactly.

Don't believe Mike?

here are some videos... how many times has a blown turbo, fuel pump, bent rod, etc. caused problems as dangerous as this. This is appearanltly a big problem with nitrous.
