DIP/MP Short Shifter

Last night after we finished working, my roomate and I decided to tackle the MP short shifters that had been lying around for a while. We followed Dimitry's writeups on removing the housing, got the housing out, and installed a couple of these:

Dip was kind enough to sell me one, but when we got the housing apart, it was very simple with a dremel to get the dimensions needed and make a second.

I gave up my lift to reverse (changed shift knobs), but kept my reverse lockout.

I'm very pleased with the turnout, shifts are much tighter, based on length of throw and precision. There is no more inbetween feeling anymore, you're either in or out.

I'd recommend anyone not satisfied with their shifters throw to do this mod. http://photo.platonoff.com/Auto/2007...Short_Shifter/

I was tentative because I hadn't had the center console off before and didn't know how much of a project it would be, but If you've got a day to kill, it definately improves the trucklike feel of the saab shifters.

Thanks Dimitry for the great writeup!

Here are some pics, sorry about the sweet focusing i did.

See the spacer he made at the bottom

Custom gaiter holder.

boost gauge I installed last week (thanks Dimitry again for your in dash writeup)

Light view of interior

All lit up

Gt28 whoring.

Next install will be Wingless, bodymatched grille, catalog kit, aero spoiler, and viggen antenna. (prob about a month)

Following install will be GS mounts, Spec stage 3 clutch from Boz and Vig PP, GS flywheel, wheel shims and Bilstein HD's. (and possibly Dimitry's 2.5" cold side IC hose, though I haven't purchased it yet)

All done by end of November.

I haven't decided whether to paint the catalog kit now, or wait until spring, where it'll get more love and less salt, I refuse to take exterior shots of my car as the front bumper needs so much love.

Im still reading the write up right now, but can you keep the reverse lockout and ignition lock? How far did you move the ball, and how much shorter is the throw now? This def. looks like something I might be doing sometime soon here.

I kept both the reverse lockout and the ignition lock on my own car, as well as some other cars I had a chance to modify. Noone complained so far ;].

The limit for the throw is almost 50% (+30 mm up the stalk), but it becomes really heavy at this point, and it's tedious to align the shifter at installation so it doesn't rub against the housing. It's still possible to do though. I ended up settling at +20 mm ball position, or about an inch shorter than the the original throw in both directions.

20mm seems to be ideal with his spacer, i went 25 mm, but it's a little work to get it over in to the 1&2 due to the design of the reverse lockout.
