viggen exhaust

hey guys
i know this has been looked at a couple of times but;
question for you
im still confused on the whole turboback vs cat back exhaust

what do i need for each???
and what would sound better???

i was looking at the JT exhaust on GS for my viggen
but not too keen on the tip on it i like the viggen tip alot and how it looks in the cutout on the bumper cover.
thanks
-josh

Hey jt,
what other kind of improvments are you planning.....IC, ECU? I'm not sure if decreasing your exhaust pressure while not improving your intake is a good idea....could run lean??

That said you want GS 3" DP v2 and for the rest of the exhaust Nick has recommended the Simons to me (correct Viggen tip). I've done the DP, IC, filter and now plan to do the exhaust, fuel regulator and ECU. The Saab Sport would have been an interesting option, but it's no longer made.

Best of luck and let us know what you decide...

I think you need to understand what each of those terms mean.

Then we need to understand what you want. We can't just tell you what you want...because we don't know what your needs are.

Turbo-back: This means replacing all of the exhaust from the turbo to the tailpipe

Cat-back: this means all of the exhaust from the mid-pipe to the tail pipe, this does NOT include the downpipe.

Downpipe: this is the part of the exhaust from the turbo to the catalytic converter - upgrading this part from the stock 60mm (around 2.5 inch) to a 3 inch downpipe will net you the most performance gains and allow you to run more agressive software.

Now, we need to know what you are looking for---

Do you want to replace the stock stuff just for a different sound and you don't care about performance? If that is the case then you want to replace the stock cat-back exhaust with either a saabsport (2.5"), Simmonsn (2.5"), ferrita (2.5"), JT (3") or have a custom built cat-back made in 2.5", 2.75", or 3"

Is performance more important to you? Then the first thing you want to do is upgrade the downpipe to a 3" unit (either the JT downpipe or the "GS V2" from genuinesaab.com). From this point you can opt to either upgrade the rest of the system as well (adding a cat-back to the 3" downpipe would mean you are replacing the exhaust form the turbo to the tailpipe, hence ''turbo-back''

If its performance and sound you are seeking but you don't have the money to buy a downpipe and an aftermarket cat-back you can just upgrade the DP and then have the center resonator from the stock exhaust replaced with straight tube, this will get you a very nice sound and will not cost much more than just the price of the downpipe.

The 3" JT system is by far the cheapest.
The complete 2 muffler catless system comes with a 3" DP and its only $579.
I have heard the one muffler option sounds very ricey.

A SaabSport system is $385 + 472.50 (DP) = $857.50

EDIT:
The JT is not stainless like the SaabSport, its aluminized steel.

Turbo back all the way if you're planning on any sort of ecu tune.

Even on a stock car you'll notice a difference.

Where did you get that info? I've heard 3" exhaust with one muffler, and it certianly does not sound ricey! It sounds much less ricey than the saabsport in fact (which has one 2.5" muffler).

Then I would suggest getting the 3" downpipe first and have the center resonator replaced with straight tube. You don't need to upgrade the cat-back right away, the 2.5" Viggen exhaust is fine for mild to moderate tunes.

It's 60mm, which (according to Google) is 2.36" so, not quite 2.5" less than a 1/4" different though.

Regardless, what are you going to do with the car? Stage 4 right away? Wait a year or two before you buy an ECU upgrade? Do you understand that even if you want to do the saabsport or some other 2.5" or 3" later you'll still want to upgrade to the 3" downpipe first?

So, my advice, again, tell us what you are going to do with the car right away.

If you're not doing stage 4 right off the bat then just replace the stock DP with a 3" one and leave the rest of the stock exhaust in place. If you have $2200 and feel like doing stage 4 right off the bat then upgrade the entire exhaust, buy an upgraded intercooler, and get a tune!

Turbo-back is the just a term for replacing the entire exhaust. Please read the first post I made, it is explained in there.

(so, yes, if you are replacing the entire exhaust you would be replacing the downpipe)
