Another *eViL* Project

I stumbled across my old scratched, chipped, nasty ghetto-cleared passenger side corner light thinger. And now I have a project to work on for tomorrow.

Guess what it is?

Okay, you got it right: air scoop. Figure I'll dremel out the forward section of the lens (where the turn signal bulb is) and leave the rearward section (reverse light) in-tact. I'll seal up that rear section (probably with packing tape, that's how ghetto this idea is), and I'll even be able to stretch the wires for the turn signal bulb to where the reverse light should be (so I'll still have a working signal). The air will hit the parabolic reflector (hereafter known as an "air funnel"), shoot through the hole in the back, and end up being directed just below the horizontal section of the heat shield on my GS intake. In theory

This project is guaranteed to look like it was whipped up in under an hour.... cause that's all the time I really wanna dedicate to it. It won't be nearly as polished as other air scoop projects out there, but it should at least be functional. I'll likely only use it for track days (or pre-meditated street-racing), so I'm not worried about water.

I'm kinda anxious to see how this half-baked idea pans out

Sounds like a cool idea. How about you just cut a big ol hole through the lens and just put that to the intake.

And you thought I was kidding about the packing tape...

I'm gonna have to hack up the wire harness for the turn signal to make it reach.... but I'll have pics of it installed before too long.

Lol, I move fast when I get these little impulse mod ideas. I don't wanna go to sleep between idea -- implementation in case I forget it

So it's just a supplemental intake of sorts. I expected a larger hole. That's certainly direct cool air however. Subtle, yet sexy and functional.
Sounds like you have some "Back to the Future" mods planned. Atta boy!

How about changing the steering rack design while your back in the 80's?

Meh, the only modification I did to the lamp housing was cutting out the lens... some day I may get antsy and bore out that hole a bit more but I've got other things to deal with first.

Like posting about my initial reaction. First thing I noticed when I was pulling out of the neighborhood... intake is louder. So yay for turbo/intake noise. Second thing I noticed: I still have a suspension rattle to the front-right. Dammit. Third thing: watching my ScanGauge, it actually did decrease intake temperatures pretty decently. Just cruising at like 35mph, ambient temperature was 98 and the intake temp was *only* 104. Of course, once I get on boost it shoots up pretty quick - but between the cooler air to the intake and my fancy-pants IC sprayer, the temps drop back down to a respectable ambient + 6-8.

So I'll call this impulsive project a success. Maybe one day (tomorrow?) I'll get bored enough to bore out that hole a bit more. I'll probably paint the "air funnel" black too, so it doesn't look like I've just got a broken light.

For now.... back to figuring out wtf is wrong with my suspension.

Doesn't look nearly as dumb as the Saabs that remove the passenger-side headlight when they run at the dragstrip.... and accomplishes the same thing. I already mentioned the difference in intake temps.... guess you read over that part.

I would cut the whole back off with a hacksaw, and rig a 4-5" section of PVC to direct air right to the filter.

Either way, it looks like a fun, cheap project..

Also, Dan, be nice.

We have not seen pictures of your entire car yet either, so zip it.
