Balance Shaft Delete

If the engine is still mostly together (not a full teardown) you can leave the old shafts in place and block the tensioner oil. This is what I did to the Viggen during the gearbox removal. It already had JE pistons.



For our new stg1 race motor I wanted a more clean and secure method.

Tapping the oil hole for 2 6mm set screws that will hold in the shafts and seal the oil. All the holes are 5mm so it is the perfect tap drill size for the 6mm threads.


We made some O ring sealing dummy shafts out of aluminum. Overkill Yes. Absolutely positive we wont be starving a bearing for oil.. priceless.


After tapping the oil passage m6x1.0, cleaning out the chips I staked the setscrew in place, not trusting the red loctite to hold.


While I am at it it is really nice to have a set of these 1 piece ring compressors in the correct bore size. It just makes it so nice.

Just taking part of a saturday to share these. Been collecting the photos in my iphoto for a while. I always try to photo document the important projects. We hired 2 new people so we are possibly getting caught up a little. Also tired of emails..

Oh the best part of that car is that we Deleted the balancers. Just to see what happens and knowing we have some spares my dad cut the outer ring off the balancer. We also machined the flywheel, well Ryan the new machinist did that following my sharpie lines. Knowing this flywheel is only temporary till the ALU are ready we did not even balance it!! This thing is nice and smooth even above 5K We are still being a little easy on it. but did hear my dad get rev limiter which is 7200 last night. I got to drive it 2 days then he parked the stg3 aero 9-5 and took the keys.

Here you can see the pulley. We ran a 9-5 short belt on it too. The intake is a 2.3NA

I was not planning on it but we have drawings of these. I do plan to make a tensioner block off plate with an o-ring seal.

Nice work Nick, I have been running balance chainless for almost 2 years now. I would like to try a lightened flywheel, but both machine shops I checked with were worried about liability.

Those balance chain inserts are heavy, that would save some weight if not do anything else. Nice work.

Dude this is awsome and for 20 bucks makes for a cheap part to replace if you have the timing cover off for anything. My one question for you is if you use this can you take out the balance shafts or do they have to remain in place for any reason.

You can NOT take out the shafts without plugging the oil passages to them. Otherwise you will have a couple of starved engine bearings.

This would be pop the cover off and remove the chain and the tensioner. Replace the tensioner with the new part and put the cover back on.
