Updates on PhilipHS's new Viggen.

I was hopping he was gonna post something up, but hasn't since he pm'd me the other day. So here is some news on the Viggen he shipped home with him to Germany.

Looks like the VA plates have been traded for Euro plates.

I bought the car November 22nd 2006 with 136.442 miles and immediately had a service performed by the Saab specialists of <A href="http://www.vikingsaab.com/">Viking Automotive, Gaithersburg, Maryland. Both O2 sensors were exchanged for brand new Bosch models.

Also, I took it to a local dyno shop to get a baseline for future tuning.

I drove the car in the US for two months before shipping it to Germany via Elizabeth, New Jersey, on January 26th 2007 (138.884 miles). My friend Kai picked it up for me at Bremerhaven, Germany and performed the minor modifications necessary to pass German road safety and emmissions inspections.

On April 30th 2007, I registered the car in Germany and picked it up at Kais place in Hamburg four days later.

Being a MY01, it has 230 hp and 350 Nm of torque in stock condition.

In May 2007, I equipped the car with 18" aluminium-magnesium wheels by Hirsch Performance, wrapped in 225/40 R18 Dunlop SP 9000 tires.

In June 2007, I took the car to Heuschmid for a complete engine and gearbox overhaul, to have a healthy base for future tuning.

Look here if you want to know more about the engine and gearbox overhaul.

At the same time, the first performance tuning was performed on the car:
  • A Quaife Automatic Toque Biasing differential was installed.
  • A new clutch kit with SPEC Stage3 Race/Street Carbon Clutch disc, supplied by Taliaferro, was installed.
Future plans:

First stage
  • Front: 323x32mm ventilated Porsche 993 biturbo brake discs with custom made bells by BSP and Porsche 996 GT3 4-piston aluminium-monobloc calipers by Brembo with custom made steel caliper carriers by Frank Grauer.
  • Rear: 300x20mm ventilated Saab 9-5 Aero brake discs, cross drilled Porsche-style by BSP and Saab 9-5 Aero rear calipers.
  • Custom made steel braided brake lines and Carbo Pad brake pads front and rear by BSP.
Second stage
  • extensive chassis modifications.

He shipped to a port city in Germany, where a friend of his picked it up. I think it was around $800 and took 2 weeks. He meanwhile had to to go Singapore, So I can't be absolutely sure on details.

That's not bad at all to ship a car across the pond. A car carrier usually charges $600-800 to ship a car within the US too.

Thanks, guys!

In the end, shipping was like 1200 USD including taxes and "unloading fee", but plus insurance. Still a very good deal, I think.

Also, the ship it was on ("Kuala Lumpur Express") got delayed three times, so it arrived first week of March ... 5 weeks ... which didnt matter to me, because, as Ben wrote, I was in Singapore at that time

Next upgrade will be the Porsche brakes ... as soon as I find the time to get em installed. Im kinda busy right now

Yours,

Philip

Ditto on mcrowley's EXCELLENT.

I would trade my RKIIs AND my EVOs for a set of those Hirsch wheels. Love 'em.

A few times when I have been in Europe for a month+ I have shipped a car there (it's cheaper then renting). I've paid anywhere from $600 up to $1100 to get a car over there.
