$2300 on NG 900 SE for power, were to start? -=Tweak=-

So ya I came into some cash, and Iím probably dropping about 2300. I going to be in with the group buy so thatís one more person, and I also have a friend here that wants one also so we might just have it.

But anyway about getting the most out of my Saab 1998 900 SE.

I have the cash to spend, and I want to get the most power out of it. Here is what I have so far. I'm going to buy everything I need for stage 4. Along with Intrax springs 1.5 drop and Rear Anti-Roll Bar. I was thinking instead of a T25/t28 turbo rebuild, for like 250 more I can get a new GT28R turbo or a GT32 turbo. Stage 5 is as far as I plan on taking the car.

Trying to find a used JT down pipe. If I can find one to save some money, and then bring my car to a shop that makes custom exhaust and see if I can get a duel exhaust. I donít know if this can be done but would look awesome. Also this would add a nice note as I could pick any muffler I like. As for the intercooler Iím going to with Spearco. Speed parts has a very nice one, might try to make it a little taller though. With Open Air filter, I have a few ideas, so Iím not worried about that. But I wanted to make sure I'm just buying wisely and getting the most HP for the BUCK. So any feed back would be awesome thanks.

snow,

sounds like you've got everything covered...

only thing you might want to think about is upgrading the brakes to Viggen discs (or getting a big brake kit from wilwood or AP racing)..

and, of course, upgrading the clutch with either a Viggen plate or one of the SPEC ones from genuinesaab....

That machine is going to be a beast!

Honestly, The T25-T28 rebuild is good if you are budget minded. Don't forget that if you drop extra money on a GtBB turbo, then you are taking money away from something that could possibly support that turbo's role. IE if you dont get a downpipe, how is that extra turbo going to perform.

My opinion on suspension b4 you do all the springs and shocks, is to do the front and rear sway bars, and poly bushings. I plan on installing the Abbott rear axle, at the same time as my springs and shocks too.

If I had to break it down with what you descriped it would be this.
New Stage 4 ECU after core refund:
-$535
GT28R Turbo
-750
JT downpipe without cat
-$340
Spearco Intercooler
-$250
Intake and Filter
-$100
Custom dual exhaust:
-$250

This sort of brings us to the end of the $2300, with maybe enough left over for springs. Seems like a healthy start, but I would definately add some items to it. What do you have ready to go, or on the car already?

you wouldnt want a dual exhaust, it would just lose a lot of power. I know for a fact that on camaros they turn to single exit exhausts cause it goes from 2 to 1 to 2 which fools around with backpressure. On camaros they make 20 hp just turning to single exhuast, i know that dinan turns to single exhaust for the new m3 and makes a fake 2nd exit for it. The only dual exhaust i would want is a true dual from the headers back with an x pipe, but were in line four so thats impossible. If you care about fashion more than function than be my guest but u will be losing some hp, and most likely torque.

Actually WS, the turbo makes all the backpressure the engine needs. The thing you want to do now is take all the exhaust away from the turbo, thus giving it better spool up time, and putting the torque in a useable location.

I plan on getting an electric exhaust dump shortly. That would in your theory give me no back pressure. However the turbo will remain, and thus give a constant amount. After the turbo, there will be none whatsoever, causing an incredibly fast spool up.

NOTE: I have a 95 with only 1 O2 Sensor, 96 and newer cars, do not try.

yeah that seems right i guess, all my facts are on na cars.... . It still seems wierd though that they lose peak hp with a dual exhaust which would mean it creates more backpressure. Im sure going from single to dual would create a larger area for the air to go out, but i doubt it will flow properly.

Right now I am bone stock.

Yeah thatís exactly right on what you had Tweak. Those are the parts that I plan on getting. But what do you think I should do about the turbo. I would like to go with a GT28RS or just R good for about 330hp or a GT32 is good for 200 up to 400hp I can spare the little extra money. I want to be able to reach stage 5 without having to upgrade my turbo.

Also who makes the front sway bar? I don't think this is made yet. I was reading about the exhaust dump housing. It seams very impressive. If makes your turbo spool up quicker, then I would just go with a GT32, but Iím not sure at what RPM this turbo spools at, Iím guessing around 3400. That dump housing sounds awesome and fairly cheap, but every review I was reading said that the noise is very loud, and catches the attention of the cops.

So my goal is to be able to spool at low RPM's but have enough power in my turbo to upgrade to a stage 6. I don't want to get a turbo thatís to big therefore needing more parts to support it. I would just like to be able to run at lower boost for now but still get good response. Also I would like to be able to make about 280hp. What other items would you add?

I plan on upgrading the suspension to my car, right after this project. Converting my car to all polly bushing would be awesome, how much do you figure that would cost? With abbots sub frame brace, do you think thatís a better buy then the one Taliaferro has?

Thanks for you help,

Dan

Don't waste your money on a huge turbo unless you'll have the software and other parts to support it. You'll just be disappointed. And, with only $2300, you really can't support a huge turbo, IMHO.

In fact, with $2300, I'd be tempted to keep the stock turbo, and spend the money you would have dumped into a turbo maxing everything else out. Instead of dumping $750 into a bigger turbo, I'd dump it into suspension and a better intercooler, etc.

Personally, I think he has an excellent plan to get the most expensive things while he has the money. And if it turns out that he needs more upgrades to achieve the maximum potential of the new parts, then the cost won't be that much more.

But definately get the basics like you've already listed:

$575 - Full 3" exhaust from turbo back(Catless)
$70 - Free Flow Cat
$50 - Intake (I can sell you one for a good price, if you don't have one)
$535 - ECU
$250 - Intercooler

The subframe brace is a touchy subject right now. I believe that with a 3inch dp, it wont clear. So you have to use spacers, wich, inturn, actually gives the brace more room to flex thus negating its effectivness. plus, you have almost no ground clearence if you drop the car too.

Really for just a $250 diff in price on the turbo, go with whatever you want. I assume there is no core charge. And if you dont do the rebuild, at least you have your turbo when the old one comes out. Plust you can sell it online to somebody to make up extra $$ at least the $250 extra you spent.

Check a few pages back..ok here is the link on the front sway bar, its actually a stock Saab part.

Hey Snow, everyone has given you good advise and I think you know what needs to be done, so I will advise you on how to do it. Remember that the stock injectors max out between 270-280 hp and the stock T25 will easily get you 250 hp. With that said I suggest you do the intake, exhaust, intercooler and stage 3 ECU first. See how you like it and you will learn where the problems are in the overall performance. At that stage it starts to become personal preference. You might want to spend the rest of your money on suspension, brakes or cosmetic upgrades, or go for more power.

I really like the 270 hp of my Saab, but with stock shocks I end up slowing down in tight turns because the suspension canít handle the power. Iím happy with my relatively small TD04 and plan to take it to 300-320 hp with a few more upgrades. But anymore than that and the cost just get too large. Take it in steps and you can build your perfect Saab.

Am I missing something, where can you get a GT28 for $750? I understood the going price for these turbo's to be ~$1900.

Entire turbo conversion kits using GT28's might cost that much, but the turbo itself isn't that expensive.

ATP has them for $780, and the GT28RS for $1,180.

A quick search on froogle turned up dozens of results for "GT28R Turbo" in the $800 - $900 range.

Check this link for ATP's site, they have it for $770 as I mentioned above - beats the price at the place you linked to.
