Talking Type 8 Primary gearset installation...

I've always wished the c900 had a 6th gear. I guess this is as close as I'm going to get...

Type 8 primary gears (aka "autobahn gears") weren't available in the states - turbo cars here got Type 7s, so unless you imported a car from overseas you didn't get them. We tried to get a group buy for new ones on SC a year or two ago but it never really took off.

Figuring a 7000 rpm redline, here's what the top speed in each gear looks like:
1st gear: 37 mph
2nd gear: 66.5 mph
3rd gear: 99.5 mph
4th gear: 138 mph
5th gear: 174 mph*

*Calculated. There's no way my overweight boxy c900 is doing these speeds.

As well as higher speeds in each gear, this makes for smooth low-rpm highway cruising. And for those who care, a 0-60 can be done with one shift :ib4OMGDRAGRACINGC900Z:

Supposedly you can swap primaries with the engine/trans in-car, by removing the radiator. We'll see how this works out. I will take lots of pictures, and post the results here when done.

A pic of the goodies:

dam im deffinatly interested in this where did you get it from, and how much did you pay? this would be a great upgrade because 1st and second are pretty much usless gears in a c900 that is pushing a good amount of hp, i know i have bald tires right now but still 1st and 2nd and if cold enough 3rd are just wheel spining gears.

Exactly. I did some informal testing in my viggen today, paying close attention to the MPH at the top of each gear. It looks like, in 1-3 at least, the ratios are comparable to the viggen gearset.

Except of course, there's a higher redline in the c900.

There are a few guys overseas that part out c900s, sometimes they come across a Type 8 box. Explain that you are a foolish american that has cash to burn, and they'll most likely send it over. Look up Paradise Saabs (dan_t16_s on SC) because he might have come across a set or two. Roam eBay UK and uksaabs.com. saabscene, etc and put the feelers out. Took me over a year to find this set.

I don't know what the type 7 primarys look like, but am guessing the only difference is the amount of gear cogs.....ie different ratios 7 vs. 8 primary.

If so, it would be cool if say some company like *GenuineSaab*(?) got a hold of a set, made a CAD drawing and made some? Just an idea.

not enough people are willing to pay to justify making them. there arent as many c900s on the road as there use to be.

I tried that one tome and all I can say it sucks, The 1st gear was too "tall" for parking driving. There was more lag, I did not like it.

I was offered a set, but the price was way out of my budget, I switched from 6 to 7 in my recent transformation and wish I had stuck with my 6's, just my driving style. I can get to 60 in 2nd with my #7's and pushing 6500 rpm. My turbo would be more spanky with #6's

my 9k with NA trans would burn third gear if i roll onto the throttle

low gearings fun, but i hate being stuck doing 65MPH at 3000 RPM on the highway

Nice! Enjoy your smoother but slower ride!

Installation should be pretty easy. Look up ejenner's pictorial on SC.

Well the calculated top speed is around 175. The c900 speedo tops out at 125. Although I acquired a KM/H speedo from a fellow enthusiast overseas, I've yet to install it. It's marked to 230km/h which is roughly 143mph.

Currently, in 5th I've got 2k RPM left after the speedometer tops out. I'd really like to find a place to do a top speed run, like the kind of racing Vigge does. That way I could get a concrete top speed measurement. Even though the c900 is a boxy beast, with 400bhp on tap it should reach a decent speed.

You should take the car out to Bonivile. I saw an SPG about a year aigo on craigslist that was a bonivile salt race car for $2000 I almost bought it but ended up geting my 89 SPG instead. There they can acuratly record your top speed. It is a realy funn time. I went 2 years aigo with some of my hot rod buddys and had a blast. There is so many unique cars and people to meet also lots of alcohol and partying. LOL It is a good time though. I am interested to see what results you get out of it. I am still in search for some for my car, I thought I found some in an SPG that was from canida but they ended up being just 7s.

Soooo jealous.

As for being worried about an overweight boxy c900 doing those speeds, it's not nearly as overweight and boxy as this... and it's doing over those speeds. Yes, the aerodynamics of a giant brick.
