Red face Suspension (monroe sensitrack?)

Hey what's up everyone, i got a 99 95 b235e.
I am in the market for new suspension all around. I'm tired of the boaty floaty feel my vehicle has in know it can be a very nible sedan, but i am on a budget and the Monroe's are around the price range i can afford. i wish i could blow $1000, on a nice fully adjustable but i need to be budget.
I guess the question I am asking is if anyone knows of anything around the same price range that may give a better performing strut and shock? Or if there is something i should know about the monroe's before the purchase?

Check-out the Bilstein HD and Sport versions for your car. They are not Monroe cheap, but definitely superior struts. Also they are non adjustable. For struts it's really Bilstein or Koni if you want a performance orientated strut. But, struts are just 1 part of the equation springs are also a BIG factor. As far as cheapest bang for the buck and ease go with either Bilstein or Koni struts and some Aero springs.

Can you get Gabrila Red Ryders anymore? Those are a little softer than the bilsteines, but not total shit like the Monroe sensatrak or KYB gas-a-just .

I would recommend pricing either Bilsteine or OEM nwe replacement units, buy what ever is cheaper. They won't be as cheap as shitty aftermarket units will be, but they will last for more than 2 years, and won't suck from day 1 like el-cheapo monroes will.

Is your current "floaty ride" actually due to a blown/warn strut? If not the swaybar kit is a good option to help shore things up.

Unfortunately nothing with suspension is cheap.

My car has always been a floaty boat but seems to be getting progressively more floaty. When exactly does one know when it's time to replace the struts?
To the Op, go with the Bilstein/Aero spring combo recommended. It's great bang for the buck.

Thumbs up Floaty boat ? That's sounds about right

Yeah floaty boat is the best way to discribe my vehicle handling. I have noticed that since the purchase of the vehicle that there has been really no absorbtion other than the springs. I let it slide just cause there was other issues i wanted to tackle first but now i am trying to get it done before the springs give way. I was also thought that a bounce and a half of inbounding should be the maxium response. I have been watching the k- sport kit that is made for the vehicle that's what i am shooting for. It's a $1000 but has front camber adjustment, and plus ride height adjustment all the way around.
Pretty much i just want something monroe cheap but don't want to go the extra mile cause i already know what I'm going for.
If there is something in the monroe category that is know for being the better product I would consider.

IMO a good Spring/Damper combo will out perform a cheapo coilover kit any day of the week.

Best combo for everyday use with good handling is the Aero springs/Bilstein HD's/Aero sway bars. That's the setup on my '00 9-5 and it is truly a great setup. Nice thing about the HD's is you can run them with your stock springs if you can't afford the Aero bits yet, but use them with the Aero bits when you have a little extra cash.

The dampers on those k-sports are likely crap. Most coilover kits that are under $2k do not use a quality damper.

The Aero kit is good, but the Bilstein HD dampers are superior to the stock Sachs Aero dampers in pretty much every measure. But for an all-in-one solution that is a good one.

Actually, a good spring/coilover mix can actually outperform even the best coilovers depending on what you mix up in the equation. I remember a thread on a different forum that was talking about all the virtues of the "better" coilovers. The result was basically favorable for coilovers, but not all agreed:

1) Cheap coilovers were not even part of the discussion. Cheap, meaning $1K and under coilovers, though for whatever reason, $1500 ones strike a magic figure because some in the $1500 range, while inferior to the better quality $3-$5K ones, are still very very good). So cheap should not be considered at all, period, unless the brand has been tested and is well reviewed in spite the cheap price tag.

2) Majority agreed a more expensive coilover setup was superior to the strut/spring setup because they are rebuildable for not too much, can adjust in mega/seemingly countless ways, and can be made for a soft or a harsh ride...simply the most versatile setup, really.

3) This said, a few chimed in stating they would never give away their strut/spring/tophat combo especially when people riding in their car and going on "handling" based runs or being used to auto-x in them have found them to be superior to their coilovers.


In the end, I would go with either the very best bang for buck strut/spring/tophat combo out there that competes with the better coilovers especially if "major" adjustability is not required.

I have started another thread and would like to know if anyone could help with listing the colours. I think i might try and tinker with a strut combo going a cheaper route if that's just as good as going with a oem part.
