Nice rig!

Owning an FJ (a.k.a. "Fake Jeep" lol), I am insanely jealous of the aftermarket options out there for you.

Saabeh 01-07-2013 07:33 AM

My friend has the exact same rig!

Here is his old ZJ. It was a 4.0L, converted to a manual trans, Ford 8.8 diff, etc etc.

do a diesel swap ;)

Of all my dearly departed cars, the ones I miss most were Jeeps. :(

When the Suburban gives up the ghost, it will be replaced by a Wrangler Unlimited.

For half the price of a Jeep, I'd rather have a nice FJ80...

Just hearing you say this means the terrorists have won.

No it doesn't. Any FJ is awesome. Great alternative to a Jeep.

srp 01-07-2013 12:23 PM

Quadratec, 4wd hardware and any of the manufactueres wesbites are good.

Rubicon Owners Forum, Pirate 4x4 and JeepsUnlimited for forums.

Buddy of mine with an 01 had the same problem as Adam. We had to drill through the frame and use long ass bolts to hold the factory skid up. We tried replacing the factory rivnuts first but they did not hold for long. But it was used as a plow so it saw the worst of the worst weather.

My XJ had tones of rust issues as well. Take care of the frame.

Half the price if y ou are lucky, but it usually comes with 3x the miles. There is a 92 on ebay right now, case in point.

1992, 180k---Asking is $9k. No thanks.

Dare to be different Palmy.

Ha.

I think they are great trucks, I just would not want to get 10k into something with 150k+ on it.

Saabeh 01-07-2013 03:22 PM

Eh, resale value i suppose. Same reason my dumbass WRX was worth $14k.

Palmer 01-07-2013 03:41 PM

Uh, have you looked at the resale on Wranglers?

Locally, there are about 10 like this. Insane. With the not so great 200 hp 3.8 engine!

At that point, you spend a tiny bit more and get a warranty AND another 80 horsepower...and better MPG.

It's insane.

That's why I'm getting a new one eventually. then I'll ditch it after the warranty, and come out Ok.

Awesome! I see he has full-doors, otherwise these two are twins. Sweet starion too by the way.

I am digging this Jeep more and more every day. Thanks to everyone on here who likes it. As for an FJ, just not comparable in my book, and for half the price? I don't know, the one Palmer linked has over twice the miles and 11 years older, and I did not pay nearly twice that amount for the rubi. :th_MySaab900Like:

Saabeh 01-09-2013 11:08 AM

As far as FJ vs Rubi goes, you pay a little more for exclusivity. Similar to paying 9-12k for a clean 2003-2005 rubicon instead of 5-7k for a non rubicon. I know that the 4.0L is an excellent motor, but a Toyota will always be a Toyota. And if its your year round DD, the Toyota anything will ride nicer. Just some of my observations.

They are all good rigs, its all about what you want to get out of your money I suppose. Just like the Rubicon, any FJ will not lose value at a quick rate.

Agreed, especially on resale. The rubicon will hold its value well, and since I paid less than what it is worth, I could trade it in at any point if I were to want something else. I plan on enjoying this jeep for awhile though, maybe get a smaller RWD car on the side (miata perhaps).

I drove my Rubicon for 2 years and made $2k on the sale. :)

Good deal there!

The Jeep survived its first rain storm and car wash. No leaks in the top anywhere, the half doors leak a bit around the sliding windows, which turns out are aftermarket (bestop halfdoor-upper door and windows sliders). Pretty happy with those so far, first "mod" will be to fix the window clips with stronger springs so the windows can not merely be slid open from outside.

Already looking at bumpers and side rails from quadratech, the mod bug is striking quick.

I used to have a 92' Cherokee 4x4. Bought it cheap for a winter beater, had 280k when the odometer BROKE. So when i bought it, it most likely had over 300k on it, but that 4L engine...that engine ran like a top, had spunk like it just came out of the factory. Probably one of the best engines ever made imo. I miss that truck, it went through EVERYTHING, but unfortunatly it had what they call the "Death Wobble", going over 45mph, the entire truck would violently shake, and by violently i mean if i were to keep going over 50 the axels would of probably ripped itself right off the body, and for what i had to stick into it, it wasnt worth it so i let it go....I still think ill end up getting a Jeep again. They are the best 4x4 for the money. Basic, dependable, rugged.
