PoorSha? What am I getting myself into?!?

Brother in law law across the country has an 86 944 turbo he is ready to give me. He is a great friend, ready to sell a company he started and realizing after many years he cannot give the Porsche some love. Thatís the quick version!

car has been sitting since 2008 in Utah, and previous to that came from California. Has about 125k miles. Looks like it was last registered in 2008, but I don't think it has been on the road since 2002.

He says it runs (probably needs a battery), but the clutch master or slave is bad since the pedal has dropped to the floor.

I'll need to ship it from Utah to Ohio! I kinda had my doubts whether or not this was going to happen, but he sent me the title last week in the mail!

It's ON! I'm thinking just to ship it. If I was more david freiburger I'd go get it and drive it home but I am not that daring. Looking at shipping quotes it looks to be about a grand. Seems reasonable and I don't think I can take a small truck (Dads S10) and go get it for cheaper.

I've had a thing for the 951 for awhile. Values are going up. This is a worthy project since it doesn't sound like a rust bucket.

GBishop 07-11-2018 12:35 PM

What is the first project you are going to tackle?

DrewP 07-11-2018 12:45 PM

So much '80's love in there, very nice!

Trionic3000 07-11-2018 05:22 PM

Yes very nice. I love the white telephones. I think they were able to make some power with those 8 valves. But really you should probably just convert it to a B235 running Trionic...

Tboy 07-11-2018 08:29 PM

Good on you Jameson, it is a 951! That was one of the first things I learned! The guys on Rennlist.com say the bodyís are galvanized so they donít rust. Iím hoping they are right since I have not looked underneath. I can confirm, the car started life in Northern California, then lived in Utah. Hope that has kept it relatively rust free. Iíll be basically taking delivery sight unseen, but the price (free) is right! I figure for the cost of shipping if things go real sideways I can sell it for a grand!

I think the first thing I will do is get it running and get a new timing belt on. No idea what the condition of that is and that is the single thing keeping me from going out and driving it back. If I could trust that to not make a paperweight out of the engine I might have a go.

I guess white phone dials on Black interior is somewhat rare and desirable. But it appears the interior was once red, or burgundy. I think I remember Brother in law mentioning it was dyed at some point.

Iím feeling exactly that though Drew, t5 conversion, or maybe drop a whole b23x in there! Iíve always wanted an Ls project though, but everyone has one of those.

Nice. I've been casually looking for a cheap example to pick up for autocross. Will be a fun project for you I'm sure!

tuner4life 07-12-2018 03:13 AM

That thing is sweet! I've always had a thing for that body style. Looks clean!

BuHuSPG 07-12-2018 06:34 AM

that's awesome. I love the white on white, those are great cars. You are smart to ship it. You never know what can go wrong on a drive that long and Freiburger makes good TV when cars blow up on the way home. You can do more to hurt the car driving it back, I think, that would end up costing more in the long run.

Trust me, I recently did a long distance drive home in a car that I thought was in good shape and it didn't go well!!!

You are 100% correct! I did read your thread and all your struggle!

951s are rad. I was *this close* to picking one up last year. I also have a thing for the 968, which is sort of like what a 944 S3 would have been (had they made one).

Great acquisition! Can't wait to see what you do with it.

I have a hard on for the 968 as well. It's like a 928(another love of mine) had sex with a 944.

One of my former bosses almost GAVE me his 928 S4 5mt because he was too lazy to ship it from NY to CA. Sad face.

kerberka 07-18-2018 02:21 PM

This car is potentially worth a great deal!

You shouldn't try to start it if it's sat for a long time without properly preparing the engine.

Someone should be able to tell you what is needed in order not to damage the car.

Really nice girt!!!

Tboy 08-27-2018 11:28 AM

I pulled the trigger on professional shipping service. I was able to get the price down to $1120 door to door from Utah to Ohio. Car should be picked up tomorrow, and delivered Friday 8/30/18. Looking forward to it. I've been busy as a mad man preparing for this by completing other projects at break neck speed (compared to how fast they were moving). I've neglected most of my house duties, and have a few projects backing up there as well. I think I may just "receive" the Porsche, and then look at it for a while as I catch up. I installed heat in the garage this year so I'm hoping that it will be much more tolerable out there this year, even though still no insulation. We will see.

turbojohnny 08-28-2018 08:09 AM

I envy you.

I love these cars. I have always wanted one.
Good luck with the project!

Drove or winched it on?

Tboy 08-28-2018 06:41 PM

Winch. Has a bad clutch master. my Bro in law says it runs good but has a decent sized oil leak he thinks is the head gasket.

tuner4life 08-29-2018 04:10 AM

Cool deal! I too have several projects that are just getting "looked at" while I finish others. Keeps me motivated and moving forward.
