Cleveland, it's acceptable

So, I'm in Cleveland with all of my worldly possessions, thanks to help from PaulH, Oldskool and Delorean as well as my non-Saaber pal, Andy, out here.

Today, before PaulH and Delorean hitched up the 9-5 to hit the trail back to northeastern Pennsylvania, we stopped by this place, HGR Industrial Surplus, that PaulH had scouted out on the Interwebs.

It's in a massive old Fisher Body Plant (I think the guy who brought us into the warehouse said it was 14 acres) and there is nearly every massive piece of metal and a hell of a lot of small ones you could imagine. It is basically row upon row of stuff like this:

There is an robot aisle as well as an aisle with forklifts, three-wheel factory bicycles - just amazing amounts of stuff.

Some of the stuff has neat-o names like "vibratory finisher" and this one down here:

We didn't buy anything this time around, but Delorean should probably pick this up:

And, on Sunday, PaulH and I took a li'l roadtrip to Akron, aka Crackron, to check out this....

Which, before Lockheed Martin got a hold of it, used to house these:

And then these:

Also, they do monthly sidewalk sales (we were unpacking my moving truck Saturday and missed it for September) where prices get slashed mightily, or so they say. Either way, there's a free lunch in it for anyone who stops by. Next up?

FREE LUNCH 11:30 am - 1 pm
Open 8 am - 2pm on the following Saturdays:

2008

October 18th
November 15th
December 20th

I'll be back in New England on the October weekend, but if anyone is in the neighborhood and wants to go in November or December, let me know.

bilmp hangars are neato. there are a couple near me at the now defunct Tustin Marine Corps Air Station. really amazing how big they are -- too bad they are due for demolition. i believe they might hold the record for the largest wooden structures in the world.

a lot of the BFJ saab ads used a Tustin blimp hangar as a backdrop:

I think PaulH might have some on his phone. They're basically robotic arms. Lemme see if I can find any photos of what we saw.

Apparently there aren't too many blimp/dirigible places left. The one in Akron is huge and just astounding. It must have been some sight when those rolled into town back in the day.

Actually, the metal picnic table probably would have fit upside-down on top of the 9-5 if the roof rack had still been on there. Next time.

There were a bunch like these. But here's the link to their entire robot line-up available online.

Neat! They don't actually use the one here for blimps anymore. But, apparently there are still some docks scattered worldwide, including a quite fancy one in Italy, I think. I'll have to dig around for the link again.

I'm jellus, ser. I can't remember the last time I saw a blimp, although, as I was telling PaulH on Sunday, I did get a ride in one when I was a kid. Don't remember a damn worthwhile thing about it, though. Drat.

I've enjoyed reading some of the alternate-history science fiction in which airships and not airplanes became the dominant mode of air transport.

yes, Cleveland is quite acceptable, actually quite a bit more acceptable than i thought it would be, the industrial surplus place was almost enough to make me want to live there, all kinds of cool shit there!

Well, you're always welcome here, you know that. Supposedly, I get electricity tomorrow morning, too!

The flame was burning bright tonight, Paul. Saw it on my way back from Rowley's with Andrew.
