Agreed. I had an open element filter on my Corrado for a few of it's engine configurations - not for any hope of gaining performance, but because it allowed for other-than-stock locations. Oh, and it sounded wicked cool. A g60 breathing through a K&N with no silencer box is like a hoover on steroids.

Blaque Well, I use a K&N filter on my custom intake. All I know...despite any dyno charts and all that...is that I like how my car performs AFTER I installed it compared to the stock filter the car came with (and the stock filter was new).

I think you could "prove" that for just about any "performance" air filter on any car. I've never seen believable proof of someone gaining power from an aftermarket air filter. And by "believable proof" I mean multiple, back to back dyno runs on the same car, same day, same conditions - repeated by multiple, independant individuals.

I never said or meant to indicate that there was anything at all wrong with K&N filters.

They are, basically, made out of corrugated cotton/paper held together by a metal mesh screen. That's not necessarially a good or bad thing though, and I did not intend to indicate that it was or wasn't.

Additionally, my statements above were intended to indicate that you should not use products designed for maintaining one type of filter on a different type of filter. Cotton paper filters and thick foam filters are totally different animals, and in either case, the manufacturer's instructions should be followed. Using K&N cleaning products on a foam filter would be like giving yourself a haircut with an electric beard trimmer. They just weren't meant to mix.

And, from my experience, K&N's have no affinity, or lack thereof, for specific brands of automobile. As long as you're not working with a real touchy management system, they probably won't cause any sort of major problem. Different VW's use vastly different engine management systems, just like different Saabs. My personal experience with K&N's on a variety of VW's has not lead to any negative consequences.

Though, IMHO, one could make a strong argument that *no* aftermarket filters will make a big difference, one way or the other, as far as performance or air cleanliness.

BurnsSide42 hey - K&N ain't paper! What's wrong with a K&N?? I have one in my stock box of my 9000T (It came with the car) and I charged it when I did my clutch. I also recharged a "like" K&N cone with the same charge kit. I've never had a problem once with any K&N filters - there's one in the VW infact (tho it's said K&N's and VW's don't mix)... again I didn't pay for it so it was a freebie.

"IGN" is a brand name of aftermarket open element filter. It is a foam pad filter, NOT a paper filter like a K&N. Hence, they are cared for in very different ways. Don't use a K&N recharging kit on it, you'll just ruin it and possibly damage your engine.

Get in touch with a tuning shop that sells them and ask what they reccomend.

BurnsSide42 K&N style? If it's an air filter buy the K&N "charging kit" It's only like $10 and is good for 3 - 4 cleanings. I'm not sure what you mean tho by an "ING Filter."
